|Volkswagen Group Malaysia today brought forth the domestically-manufactured Polo Sedan as a catalyst variant in the ultra competitive small compact segment. The locally-assembled 2014 VW Polo sedan, aptly deemed German engineered – Malaysian assembled, is the result of the partnership effort between Volkswagen Group M’sia (VWGM) and domestic partners DRB-Hicom.|
A step-up from the previous Polo sedan which was introduced two years back, the 2014 Polo sedan inherits some similarities, especially on the exterior, from the 2012 version. VW’s newest compact holds steadfast to the Wolfsburg-based marque key identities such as the chrome finish on the front grille and recognizable air-dams at the front and the rear. The front fascia also include the chrome rounded foglights, adjustable headlights (halogen) with bright white surrounds, variable wipers, and the ‘chic’ Polo bottom grille. From the side, the sedan shows off a straight-forward shoulder line which runs from the headlight to rearlight, and another at the bottom that connects the front and rear wheel arches. At the rear, there are the revised VW badge, placed at the center of the boot lid, as well as prominent Volkswagen and Polo wordings on the left light cluster and right. Wheels and tyres for the 2014 Polo sedan consist of the Riverside alloys and 185/60R15s.
2014 Polo sedan gets a refreshed exterior with lots of interior updates
Though Volkswagen most recognizable compact doesn’t carry a lot of revisions on the exterior, the interior of the Polo sedan has several notable new additions such as the new RCD 320 Radio system with multi-language support, USB and iPod interface, SD card slot, AUX-in and Bluetooth connectivity; “Climatronic” automatic air conditioning system; rear air conditioning vent; and a new height-adjustable front centre armrest with storage box and rear cup holder.
Other highlights include the three-spoke tilt & telescopic, leather-wrapped steering with switches, ‘Livon’ fabric seats, multi-function display, chrome package (chrome surrounds for radio and light switches, AC panel and vents, steering wheel accent), and leather materials for the handbrake and gear knob.
Equipped with a 1.6-liter 105PS petrol injection 16-Valve Multi Point Injection (MPI) engine and 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, the 2014 Polo Sedan churns a credible 105 PS and provides the highest torque in its segment at 153Nm@3800 rpm. Better still, fuel efficiency has been improved from the previous Polo, the latest VW compact sedan now offers a combined fuel consumption of 6.5 liters per 100km or 15.4km per liter, while CO2 emissions holds steady at 154 g/km.
The Volkswagen Polo sedan bears all the hallmarks of an assuredly safety compact as it incorporates these safety features; dual front airbags with additional dual side airbags, Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) and anti-pinch windows, ISOFIX system, anti-theft alarm system and ABS. But, for obvious cost reasons, ESP has not been included for this edition.
Dr. Zeno Kerschbaumer, Managing Director of VWGM, said, “The locally assembled Polo Sedan carries 100 % Volkswagen DNA that encompasses a strong heritage in German automotive engineering. We trust that the 2014 Polo Sedan with its class leading features will definitely give Malaysians a new level of affordability with uncompromised German technology. The strong support of DRB-HICOM as an esteemed partner in providing the automotive production complex further strengthens this achievement.”
