The Nissan LEAF now has a range topper for 2019 line-up. To date, there’s been 400,000 units sold globally since the LEAF first came out in 2010.
For the 2019 model year, the LEAF e+ gets a more powerful motor to pump 217 PS and 340 Nm. The LEAF is able to hit 385 kilometers (239 miles) of zero-emissions driving on a single charge. The more powerful motor comprise of high-performance lithium-ion batteries, coupled with high capacity energy storage and reliability, Nissan claims that the low band acceleration is better by 13 % compared to the previous LEAF, while top speed gains 10% improvement.
With the Nissan LEAF e+, the newly-developed 62kWh battery pack offers 55% more capacity and approximately 25% improvement in energy density while retaining a similar shape and size to the 40kWh LEAF battery pack; all without compromising the vehicle’s exterior design and interior space. Other than a 5mm increase in the car’s overall height (based on 16-inch wheels), the car’s dimensions are unchanged.
The LEAF e+ uses a new battery module design that allows for cell modules to vary in number. The new battery module uses an innovative laser welding technique on the cell joints to reduce the overall length of the module. At the same time, by changing the number of lamination layers of the cell, an optimal module height that matches the shape of the vehicle can be achieved. The combination of these technologies has made it possible achieve high energy density efficiently inside the battery pack. Other key components include ternary cathode material and laminated-structure cells (battery cells). The battery pack has a thermal management system.
For in-car connectivity, the LEAF got the NissanConnect infotainment system, with a larger 8-inch touchscreen. This is compatible with CarPlay, Android Auto, onboard navigation and inbuilt Online Map Update facility and Chargers Location functionality. There’s also a Remote Climate Control functionality that lets users pre-set air conditioning or heating while their LEAF is still plugged to the charging point.
Safety on the LEAF relies on the ProPILOT advanced driving assistance technology. ProPILOT is a driving assistance technology which works on single-lane highways.
The 2019 Nissan LEAF is offered in 10 colors and 7 two-tone body and roof combinations. Price starts from 35,895 pounds.
