2019 Proton Saga, where affordability goes beyond

National camakers Proton unveiled the Most Affordable car in its portfolio, the Saga, last evening. At a price range of RM32,800 (Standard MT), RM35,800 (Standard AT) and RM39,800 (Premium AT), the Proton Saga is the cheapest in the most affordable car category, as far as a brand new car goes.

Again, the Geely effect is transferred to the 2019 Proton Saga after the Persona, Iriz and X70. Proton is banking on this to gain a strong footing their quest to top the local TIV.

The refreshed Saga has a four-speed automatic gearbox and plenty of transferred features from its current models. We’ll tabulate each below.

The Saga is a significant model as it is the car first introduced way back in 1985 when Proton was conceived. Fast forward to present time, there’s been only three revamps through 34 years for this little car.  Outlook-wise, the front bumper with DRLs is new, along with the X70 grille, a trademark of Geely cars.

From the rear, the bumper follows the styling at the front but carries a rear duck-tailed spoiler and an emblem on the boot lid. The highest variant gets a set of 15-inch wheels.

Moving interior, the car gets a 7-inch display (highest variant), plus fresh seat upholstery, a new center piece and new meter combination display with Eco Drive Assist. Other amenities include a remote trunk release, a sun visor with a ticket holder mirror, LED map light and assist grips matching headlinings.

Proton didn’t specify the engine in their official release, but it’s the ol’ 1.3-liter, paired with the four-speed transmission. Therefore, output and torque should be mediocre and expectations should be within the price range set for this model

Safety equipment fitted for the Sage consist ABS with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), 2 front airbags, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX. The top variant got extra Hill Hold Assist, front parking sensors, a reverse camera and ESC with a traction control. For an under RM40K car to include ESC and TCS, it’s almost unheard of.

At a starting price of RM32,800, the Saga comes with three extra Value packages beginning with the service package, the interest rate package with financing rates as low as 2.98% per annum, and an insurance package. There’re also additional discounts.
