Deemed the Boss, the BMW X5 receives gradual improvements across the board; namely on aesthetics, technological aspects (BMW EfficientDynamics) and the ConnectedDrive. At a glance, the formative X design cues are evident on the SAV’s front fascia and elaborated lines to the side and rear of the SAV further set this variant apart of its main rivals’ similar variants. Outstanding exterior items on the X5 include twin-headlight with Adaptive LEDs and rounded foglights, protruding wheel arches, Matte Silver rear trim strip, Satin Aluminium exterior line, the front apron’s air curtains, the side walls’ air breathers and rear’s aeroblades. With a 0.31cd(co-efficient drag), the X5 is considered a leader in its segment.
BMW X5: Interior refinements include a bigger cabin, boot space and general amenities
Interior-wise, the new BMW X5 takes no prisoners with a 40/20/20 split rear seat backrest and a boot space of 1,870 liters; 120 liters more than its predecessor. A two-part tailgate is easily accessible via a switch on the driver’s seat or remote (the vehicle’s access key). Seats on the X5 consist of exclusive Leather Dakota materials, while interior trims incorporate fine-wood oak on the XDrive35i and Silver Dark Matte on the xDrive30d. Sports leather adorns the steering and gear paddles for both BMW X5 versions.
In addition, there are ample small storage compartments for occupants’ required amenities and two additional seats on the third row for kids or extra bags. Interior ambience is accentuated by the Welcome lighting with 9 settings and LED sources on the dashboard, front and rear footweels, door and even door inserts. With the exception of the BMW ConnectedDrive, new range of in-car connectivity and driver aids comprise color HUD (Heads-up Display), iDrive operating system (xDrive 35i only), and the X5’s driver’s assistance system like; the Surround View Camera and
Anti-dazzle High-Beam Assistant.
The 3rd-generation BMW X5 is paired to either a bi-turbo petrol (xDrive 35i) or diesel powerplant (xDrive30d). All engines are matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The X5 xDrive35i delivers a maximum output of 306 hp and 400Nm of torque, while the diesel version does 258 hp and 560Nm of torque. A sprint from 0 – 100 km/h is 6.5 seconds for the xDrive35i and 6.9 secs for the diesel X5. Fuel consumption has been cut by 16 percent when compared to the previous generation, thanks to EfficientDynamics and the available ECO Pro mode. Preliminary consumption and emissions ratings revealed these figures: 8.5 liters per 100km and 199 grams per 100 km (xDrive35i) and 6.2l per 100km and 164g/km (xDrive30d).
The essential all-wheel drive system, xDrive, and power steering now ensure much improved driving dynamics. For the first time, Adaptive Comfort suspension package on the xDrive 35i which comprises Dynamic Damper Control and self-levelling pneumatic rear suspension lets the driver choose the most intuitive drive mode.
