|The latest incarnation of the Ferrari 458 comes in the form of the “Speciale” edition. The Ferrari 458 Speciale is the Maranello-based Sports car manufacturer’s definitive highlight for September’s IAA Frankfurt Motor Show.|
The Ferrari highlight at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor show
From its transition of the regular 458 Italia to the Speciale, the special edition receives due updates in various departments, i.e. powertrain, aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics. For aerodynamics, the 458 Speciale gets the advanced active aerodynamics for the very first time. Accordingly, upcoming Ferrari variants will be instilled the adv. active aerodynamics.
With removable front and rear aero. elements, the 458 Speciale gets a more balanced downforce and an optimized drag reduction. This translates to the 458 Speciale being the the most aerodynamically efficient range production sports car, with an E Index of 1.5.
Design-wise, the 458 Speciale differs very little to the Italia version; with the exception of center black and white strip that stretches from the engine hood’s tip to the edge of the car’s rear wing. Still, the 458 Speciale, no matter the number of elements added or removed, is a sight to behold!
Ferrari has now built its most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever (605 cv) for the 458 Speciale with an extraordinary specific power output of 135 cv/l , the highest ever achieved by a road-going naturally aspirated engine. Thanks to an equally exceptional weight/power ratio of just 2.13 kg/cv, the 458 Speciale can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.0 (0-200 km/h in 9.1) and also clocked a lap time of just 1:23.5 at the Fiorano Circuit. [CV: Caballo de vapor; 1 CV equates to 0.986 hp].
To assure greater driver confidence and control at high speeds, the 458 Speciale undertakes the vehicle dynamics subsystems which include the power oversteer management and the Side-slip angle control system. The Side-slip angle control performs instant-to-instant analysis of the car’s side slip, comparing it with the target value and then optimizing both torque management (via integration with F1-Trac traction control) and torque distribution between the two wheels (via integration with the E-Diff electronic differential). These numbers should tell you that the 458 Speciale is also an appropriate track car; fastest response time (0.060 s) and lateral acceleration (1.33 g), highest ever achieved by a Ferrari.
