Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) today launched two new models for the domestic market, the all-new VW Passat and Beetle Dune. The eighth-generation VW Passat comes with a host of new design elements, interior features and state-of-the-art technologies.

First introduced in the country in 2006, the Passat has been one of the best selling model for Volkswagen Malaysia. The 7th-generation Passat which came up in 2011 was locally assembled in the country at the DRB-Hicom’s Pekan plant.

Like its Vento sibling, the VW Passat is offered in three ranges: Highline, Comfortline and Trendline. The Comfortline and Trendline variants take up the 1.8-liter turbo powerplant with 7-speed direct shift gearbox, while the Highline is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI engine, paired to a 6-speed DSG. The 2.0l powertrain enables an output of 220PS and a torque of 350Nm between 1,500 to 4,400rpm. A zero to hundred sprint on the new Passat Highline takes 6.7 seconds, yet the car remains frugal at 6.2l/100 km.

On the exterior. the VW Passat is an impressive sight with a dome-shaped bonnet and menacing front fascia. The front headlights with adaptive LEDs and washer system, and a low-slung bumper give the Passat an athletic pose. At the side, the low-sloping silhouette and refined shoulder line further accentuate the car’s sleek profile. The Passat’s profile comes complete with 18-inch “Dartford” alloy wheels.

The new Passat has a clean rear-end thanks to the LED rearlights, a concave bumper and a diffuser-typed skid plate with reflectors.

The interior of the new VW Passat shares the many familiar layout of its siblings the Vento and Golf, in particular. The cabin has an assortment of aesthetic and functional features such as KESSY keyless entry, push start, leather multi-function steering with paddle shifters, auto-dimming rear view mirror, cruise control, auto power windows, 3-zone temperature control, ‘Vienna’ partial leather seats, 12-way adjustable driver seat, height adjustable armrest, rear a/c vents and Park Assist. The interior is finished with “Brilliant Pine” wood decorative inserts. For the first time, the new Passat comes fitted with Easy Open, a keyless sensor controlled tailgate (trunk). The height adjustable tailgate opens automatically by detecting the driver’s foot.

The new VE Passat’s infotainment system with touchscreen, rearview camera and Mirrorlink gives drivers diverse connectivity and navigation access options. Furthermore, the cutting-edge, interactive and customizable Active Info Display system with a high resolution, completely digital instrument cluster replaces the traditional instrumentation.

To aid a more efficient driving experience, the new VW Passat has a preset of five different themes and different modes: Classic, Eco, Driving Assistance, Fuel Consumption and Navigation.

Safety is at the core of all Volkswagen vehicles. The new Passat is equipped with key safety features such as Lane Assist, Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Electronic Differential Lock (XDS). Other features include six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Brake Assist (BA), Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS), as well as hill-hold control and ISOFIX.

The available Start/Stop function deactivates the engine when the car is at a standstill and reactivates when you move. At the same time, the new Passat is equipped with regenerative braking and low rolling resistance tyres for effective energy utilization and better fuel economy.

The new Volkswagen Passat is offered in seven colors: Pure White, Deep Black, Reflex Silver, Indium Grey, Crimson Red, Black Oak Brown and Harvard Blue. The range starts with the Passat Trendline at RM 159,990, Passat Comfortline at RM179,990 and Passat Highline at RM 198,990.

Alongside the new Passat, Volkswagen Malaysia introduced the limited edition Beetle Dune.  Deemed the most rugged Beetle of all, the VW Beetle Dune is limited to just 50 units in the country at a starting retail price of RM 179,999.

The Beetle Dune, imported from Mexico, comes with a 1.4L TSI turbocharged engine with a 7-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG), delivering 150PS and 250Nm of torque.

Dune signature black stripes and side mouldings, an extensively redesigned front and rear bumper, and rear spoiler adds to a powerfully proportioned stance, while 18-inch ‘Canyon’ alloy wheels complete its dune buggy appearance. An increased ground clearance of 10mm further adds to its ruggedness.

Decked in an eye-catching ‘Sandstorm Yellow’ hue, the Dune also comes with Bi-Xenon headlights with LED DRLs, LED taillights and front fog lights with static concerning lights.
