|The 2014 Acura MDX which recently debut at the New York Auto Show is a completely new platform of the brand’s luxury SUV.|
Built at the Lincoln, AL plant and valid in two-wheel drive models, the MDX features 55% lightweight materials – including high strength steel, aluminum and magnesium – resulting in a vehicle that is both more rigid and lightweight, with total vehicle weight reduced 125 kilograms (275 pounds) from its predecessor.
Acura MDX design
The new MDX boasts an “Executive Aero Sculpture” exterior. along with an aerodynamic body design. At the front, the strong fascia with a bold-typed grille and Jewel Eye LED headlights with bi-Xenon are sure to turn heads on the road. The side and rear highlights include a streamlined silhouette, sculpted profile, third brake light on a duck-tailed spoiler, wrapped-around combination lights and a stepped-up bumper with skid plate. The exterior package is completed by the standard 18-inch wheels and 245/60R18 tyres, or the optional 19-inch with 245/55R19 tyres.
Acura MDX interior and powerplant
Interior-wise. the 2014 Acura MDX takes up revised body dimensions which offer a spacious cabin and higher comfort level. The 7-seater SUV features intuitive second-row seats, easy occupant access to the third-row seats, and lots of occupants’ conveniences such as, for the One-Touch Walk-In (a first), four-postion recline and extended slide capability on row 2 seats and a bigger boot space with underfloor storage. The driver and front passenger seats comprise a 10-way power adjustable and an 8-way power adjustable. The MDX also addresses a major shortcoming of many luxury SUVs – available front-seat storage space – with a spacious new center console that can accommodate more personal items.
The MDX’s luxury quotient is further boosted by its upgraded interior appointments, including premium leather-trimmed interior, silver plated accents, LED overhead and cabin accent lighting, along with new optional luxury features, such as Smart Entry, second-row sunshades, remote engine start, and auto-linked air conditioning and climate-controlled seats. For occupants’ entertainment purposes, the ELS Studio audio system, incorporating the next-generation AcuraLink connectivity with Real-Time Traffic and Cloud-based Connected, promises sheer upbeat music and beats for the driver and passengers alike. Working with the ELS audio system are features such as, a 7-inch color On Demand Multi-Use Display (ODMD) touchscreen, an 8-inch Color Information Display and a DVD rear system with a 9-inch full VGA screen for the rear seats. If the 9-inch rear screen is not big or clear enough, go for the Advance package’s ultra-wide, 16.2-inch full VGA screen with HDMI compatibility.
The 2014 Acura MDX is powered by an all-new direct-injected 24-valve 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), producing 290 horsepower and 362 Nm (267 lb-ft) of torque. The MDX’s engine architecture is shared with two racecars that recently finished first and second in the LMP2 class at the 12-Hour of Sebring endurance race in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). Employing a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sport Mode and Sequential SportShift Paddle Shifters, the new MDX will be offered in both Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD™) and two-wheel-drive drivetrain variants, both featuring Acura’s new Agile Handling Assist technology.
To satisfy the preferences of multiple drivers in any family, the 2014 MDX features an all-new Integrated Dynamic System (IDS) with three modes: Sport, Normal and Comfort. IDS adjusts steering effort, throttle response, SH-AWD and active sound to suit the tastes of the driver. The MDX’s new Amplitude Reactive Dampers, MacPherson strut front suspension and new multi-link rear suspension enable its more nimble and responsive handling and improved ride quality.
The 2014 MDX offers numerous innovative driver assist systems and visibility technologies, including a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow, Blind Spot Information (BSI) and Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS). Other pertinent safety features consist of, Advanced Compatibility Engineering II (ACE II) body structure, 4-wheel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with Traction Control, airbags, and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems.
Acura MDX Availability
The 2014 Acura MDX, available for the U.S. market, will be offered in four grades – the well-equipped MDX, the robust MDX with Technology package, the rear-passenger-friendly MDX with Technology and Entertainment packages, and the top-of-the-line MDX with Advance and Entertainment packages. Prices haven’t been confirmed at this point in time.
