Twenty-one owners of the much coveted Alfa Romeo 4C ‘Launch Edition’ recently saw track action at the Varano de’ Melegari track. There was also a visit to the Modena plant where the 4C is manufactured. The Alfa Romeo 4C ‘Launch Edition’ lightweight Sport Coupe is limited to 500 units for the European market. Alfa Romeo’s Gem is a true driving machine without compromise that delivers a 0 – 100 km/h dash in just 4.5 seconds flat and 258 km/h of top speed. All this is made possible by the Sport Coupe’s optimum weight distribution at 40% on the front axle and 60% of the rear axle, as well as a weight to power ratio under 4 kg/HP.

The first 21 4C Launch Edition owners from Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium and Italy were provided an opportunity to put their 4Cs to track action, courtesy of the brand. More importantly, the track excursion gave owners an insight on the 4C’s evolved technology and top quality craftsmanship, even the unique technical solutions and in-depth details involved in the manufacturing procedures.

Alfa Romeo 4C Launch Edition shares assembly lines with Maserati at Modena

Alfa Romeo’s lightweight sport coupe comes off the plant at Modena, which essentially manufactures Maseratis. ‘Gems’ of technology and styling like the Quattroporte, Granturismo and Grancabrio have come off these lines in just the last decade, as did the fascinating Alfa Romeo 8C even more recently. It was the first time that the Maserati plant opened up its doors to another brand, one particularly similar to Maserati in terms of tradition and ambition. Now it’s up to the Alfa Romeo 4C for which the 4C Workshops were set up, areas dedicated to the ‘bodyshell’ and ‘assembly’ operations. The ‘testing’ and ‘finishing’ areas, on the other hand, are shared with Maserati production.

At the Varano track, the owners tackled the short 2.4 km course and learnt the secrets of sports driving. Alfa Romeo also provided the Giulietta and MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde version for the owners to try out. Leading them onto the track were the professional driver-instructors of Andrea de Adamich’s International Safe Driving Center, a top-rated school that has been the official location of safe and sports driving courses organized in collaboration with Alfa Romeo since 1991.

The Alfa Romeo 4C’s lightweight structure with carbon fiber monocoque is paired to the combination of the new 240 HP 1750 Turbo Petrol engine with the latest-generation ‘Alfa TCT’ dry twin clutch transmission and the advanced Alfa DNA selector with the brand-new Race mode. More specifically, the new ‘4 cylinder’ 1750 Turbo Petrol with direct injection at 200 bar and aluminium block achieves exemplary performance. Torque and specific power set new records for this size of engine at over 200 Nm/l and 137 HP/l, respectively, while maximum power of 240 HP (176 kW) is reached at 6000 rpm. The maximum torque of 350 Nm ensures extraordinary flexibility since it is maintained constant between 2100 – 4000 rpm and remarkably 80% of it is already delivered at just 1800 rpm. The day came to an end with participants receiving a certificate and awards given to the top three drivers of each of the skill tests offered.

Alfa Romeo 4C Launch Edition in two exciting liveries

The Alfa Romeo 4C Launch Edition is offered in two liveries: ‘Alfa Red’ or the exclusive matt ‘Carrara White’. The line of this limited edition is enhanced by the carbon aerodynamic kit (including headlights, spoiler and door mirror covers) that not only exalts the style of the car but reduces its weight still further. It also has the rear aluminium extractor with dark finishing, Bi-LED headlights and 18″ (front) and 19″ (rear) alloy wheels with dark treatment. To accentuate the sports look still further, there are front air intakes, brake calipers in a specific color, racing exhaust system and suspension kit with specific calibration for shock absorbers and rear anti-roll bar. The same styling imprint is found inside, where the sports seats and steering wheel – both covered with leather and microfiber and trimmed with white stitching, stand out together with the distinctive plate bearing the progressive number from 1 to 500.
