With the new CX-9, Mazda is proposing a new kind of a crossover SUV aimed at more up-market crowd. The latest in KODO design portrays a more premium image and the new CX-9 offers quieter, more refined “Jinba-ittai” driving with outstanding fuel economy performance. Designed to meet the needs of the modern family, the Crossover SUV offers a comfortable and well-thought-out cabin space, i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features and the i-ACTIV AWD all-wheel-drive system.
The next-generation Mazda CX-9 is the first variant to feature the new 2.5-liter direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine, SKYACTIV-G 2.5T. Developed in line with this philosophy and based on the naturally aspirated SKYACTIV-G 2.5 featured in the Mazda6, the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T is the first turbocharged engine in the SKYACTIV-G series, and it delivers exceptional catalog and real-world fuel economy, excellent response without turbo lag as well as linear and powerful acceleration in the low- to mid-rpm range. Power output on the new CX-9 is boosted up to 227 hp (169 kW), while maximum torque gets up to 420 Nm (310 ft-lb) at 2,000 rpm. These figures are comparable with a naturally aspirated 4-liter gasoline engine. Thanks to the engine’s Dynamic Pressure Turbo and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, turbo lag is a thing of the past on the new CX-9.
The CX-9 variant, tailored for North America, is expected to account for 80 percent of global sales forecast at 50,000 units annually. The sales roll out in the U.S.A. is beginning from the spring of 2016.
The Mazda CX-9 variant is available in Malaysia as a Premium SUV Crossover, with a starting price tag of RM296,000. The previous generation CX-9 had already incorporated minor KODO design elements, when it was introduced by Bermaz Motor (Mazda Malaysia) in November 2013. There are two versions of the CX-9 in the country, either 4X2 or 4X4, while the powerplant comes in the form of a naturally-aspirated 3.7-liter V6 unit; that’s mated to a 6-speed Activematic transmission.
