|UMW Toyota Motor today introduced the all-new Toyota Vios at the KL Hilton in the heart of the Capital city. The new Toyota Vios is a significant variant in the UMW Toyota Motor line-up that has amassed some 250,000 units since its debut in 2003.|
How significant is the Toyota Vios as a popular non-national car? According to UMW Toyota Motor, the Vios accounts for 6 of every 10 car buyers in the country and as at August this year, the variant has grossed approximately 265,000 units. The all-new Toyota Vios has already received 8,000 units booked since bookings opened in mid-August. UMW Toyota Motor intends to deliver up to 36,000 units of the new Toyota Vios per year.
After an update in June 2011, the 3rd Generation Toyota Vios takes on a more radical styling that corresponds to today’s upbeat B-segment cars.
All-new Toyota Vios bulkier and more masculine than before
Exterior-wise, the new Toyota Vios gets a flowing silhouette and three-dimensional design. In other words, it got a lot more masculine and bulkier compared to the previous generation. In dimensions, the new Vios’ body size is up to 110 mm longer, and the roofline has gone up by 15 mm. The compact’s width and wheelbase of 2550mm, however, remain similar to its predecessor. Highlights at the front include a significantly classier headlights with projecter lamps & levelling for the G and TRD versions, a slender chrome-typed grille with the slightly larger Toyota emblem, a black mesh “trapezoidal” bottom grille that’s paired to the bumper and embedded foglights with DRL (Daytime running lights) panels; only for the G and TRD Sportivo versions. Viewed from the side, the new Vios has a longer profile which is visually ‘extended’ by a long straight character line that runs from front to back. Thanks to the ‘Catamaran’ roof, the car has a more effective airflow which more or less assist in acceleration and fuel efficiency. Other elements that accentuate the car’s side profile consist of ‘aero’ door mirrors and small stabilizing fins.
The rear of the car has Wrapped around lights that instantly differentiate the new Vios from the 2nd generation Vios. Additionally, the raised rear bumper corners emphasize a wide stance as well as a more sturdy look. There are three 15-inch alloy wheels on offer for the 1.5E, J, G and TRD Sportivo versions.
To spruce things up, UMW Toyota Motor makes the TRD Sportivo available alongside the three versions. The TRD Vios incorporates a smoked headlights housing, LED day-running lights and a 5-piece aerokit. On the inside, there are; sport seats, TRD floor mats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching and audio switches, sports analogue meters with white lighting, and TRD embossed scuff plates on the front door sills.
New Toyota Vios gains further improvements on the inside
The interior theme of the new Vios is all about spaciousness and versatility. A slightly larger cabin denotes better support and comfort for the driver and all occupants. Interior highlights include customized upholstery and color schemes for Vios specification, a 3-D ‘floating’ center console, two types of audio system, three-meter instrument cluster with Multi Information Display (MID) on the TRD Sportivo and G, a leather wrapped steering, and air-conditioning and ventilation rotary dials.
The upholstery and color schemes for the top range TRD Sportivo is made up of black leather with red trim, while the Vios 1.5G is instilled leather in darker ivory, the Vios 1.5E has gray and black fabric, and the base version J takes on black fabric. In the audio system department, the Vios TRD Sportivo through E version incorporate the integrated audio unit that has a stylish front panel and piano black ornamentation. Storage has also increased somewhat in the new Vios, there are up to 506 liters of boot space and four compartments for smaller items. Entry into the car is via smart entry, while ignition is activated on a push start switch (probably for the two higher versions).
In the powertrain department, the new Vios inherits the 1NZ-FE 1.5-litre 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve engine with VVT-i that’s paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission or 5-speed manual transmission for the base version. The car outputs 80 kW or 109 ps at 6,000 rpm and gains 141 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm.
Important safety features instilled in the new Vios are; the impact absorbing body structure, multiple airbags, pre-tensioner seatbelts, whiplash design front seats, ISOFIX, ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) with Brake Assist.
