The 5th-generation Toyota Supra was revealed at last year’s NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) as a revival of sort for Toyota’s iconic Sports car variant. Soon after that, the GR Supra, developed by Gazoo Racing, came about and  extended the Supra’s portfolio. The Supra first came fitted with a 3.0l straight six turbo engine.

As we roll into 2020, Toyota has announced a new 2.0l turbocharged single twin-scroll engine for its front engine/rear-wheel drive 2-seater sports car. This engine has smaller capacity but equal to the 3.0l V6 on performance in many ways: inertia characteristics, sharper handling and chassis balance. An eight-speed auto transmission is paired to the powertrain. More importantly, the Supra 2.0l is meant to garner more mass appeal.

Now, everyone wants to know the output the GR Supra 2.0l does. Well, it pumps 258 DIN hp/190 kW and a peak torque of 400 Nm. This enables an acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds and a maximum (governed) speed of 250 km/h. Although smaller with reduced weight (100 kilograms lighter than the 3.0l), the dynamics aren’t compromised thanks to a more compact engine that sits closer to the car’s center, giving It a 50:50 balance, like a roadster. The ratio between the car’s wheelbase and track dimensions is 1.55, which is an ideal range.

As an entry sports car, the GR Supra 2.0 comes in Live specification, with standard features including 18-inch alloy wheels, a four-speaker audio system with 8.8-inch display and sports seats upholstered in black Alcantara. For its launch edition, the car is painted in Fuji Speedway colorway consisting white metallic paint finish. The 19-inch matt back alloy wheels and red door mirror housings are standard as well.

Inside, the cabin has a carbon fiber dashboard inserts, red & black Alcantara upholstery, and Connect (navigation + connectivity) and Sport (active differential + adaptive variable suspension + sports-quality brakes) packs. There’s also a Premium pack for comfort and convenience featuring a 12-speaker JBL premium sound system, head-up display, wireless smartphone charger, black leather upholstery and power seat adjustment with memory setting.

In the safety department, this sports car has a Pre-Crash Safety with Braking Function, Pedestrian and Cyclist detection with Braking Function, Lane Keep Assist [LKA] with Active Steering, Road Sign Assist and an Intelligent Speed Assist.

Toyota has revealed that the GR Supra with 2.0l is due for unveiling in March. Toyota said there are only 200 units available for Europe. Toyota didn’t reveal numbers or availability for other parts of the world.
