The BMW M2 have been on Malaysian roads for nearly 3 years, on 28th June 2019, BMW Malaysia decided to bring in the more powerful M2 competition into Malaysia. So what’s the update on the M2 Competition?

Exterior

The BMW M2 Competition maintain the original coupe design look. To make the car look different from the ordinary M2, there’s a new looking front skirt that optimizes the airflow to help cool the engine while giving the M2 Competition a better look. The chrome parts like the BMW kidney grille and the side gills have been blacked out to make it look sportier. There’s also an additional M-specific twin strut side mirror that improves aerodynamics of the M2 Competition.

The BMW M2 Competition also comes equipped with a revised exhaust system that features a new muffler and four tailpipes that is finished in black chrome. There are two controlled flaps that produces a distinctive BMW M tune which can be adjusted by the driver by pressing on a selector switch on the center console.

Engine and drivetrain

The BMW M2 Competition power unit have been upgraded to a new inline 6 cylinder engine that comes from the same engine platform as BMW M3 and BMW M4. This S55 BMW M engine is a TwinPower Turbo engine that produces 410bhp at 5,230-7,000rpm and 550Nm at 2,350-5,230rpm. Putting it into perspective, this engine is 40bhp and 85Nm more than the non-Competition variant. This engine helps the car to hit 100km/h from standstill in 4.2 seconds and tops out at a limited 250km/h.

To transmit the power from the engine to the road, there is a Seven-Speed Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic. The Drivelogic provides the driver preconfigured driving modes for the driver to select depends on their driving situation.

The lubricating system in the engine have been upgraded to provide uninterrupted oil circulation around the engine. There is also a new cooling system that improves the transmission oil cooling in every different driving situation.

Chassis control

The M2 Competition have an updated chassis to cope with the new engine. The 1st noticeable chassis upgrade is inside the engine compartment, a high-precision carbon fiber strut to provide maximum steering precision. BMW also included a solid-mounted rear subframe and forged-aluminum control arm to increase vehicle stability during high speed.

The electrical power steering system in the M2 Competition is also connected with the Drivelogic setup. This will change the setting for the power steering assistance to the driver’s personal preferences. There is also a recalibrated Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system that will work in tandem with the BMW M Differential which will improve traction and stability of the vehicle at speed. For trackdays lover, there is a M Dynamic Mode that incorporates with the DSC allows a higher degree of acceleration out of corners before the DSC steps in.

The Interior

When you 1st step inside the M2 Competition cabin, you’re greeted by the M2 Competition badge on the door sills to remind you that you’re in something special. The front seats of the M2 Competition is fitted with an illuminated M2 logo on the backrest, and it’s complimented with the classic M-woven safety belts.

The center console of the M2 Competition comes with carbon fiber trim. There is a 8.8” Navigation system Professional with Touch Display capability that feature the BMW M Laptimer for enhanced motorsport telemetry. The system is hooked up to the Harmon Kardon speaker system around the vehicle.

There is also a driver assistance system that includes a cruise control that link to the intelligent braking function. The Park Distance Control on the front and rear of the vehicle to assist drivers with reverse parking and maneuvering.

Price and Colour

Priced at RM626, 800, the BMW M2 Competition comes with 5-year unlimited warranty and free service program. There is also a 2-years/24 months tire warranty package for its Run Flat Tire. BMW also provide roadside assistance and an accident hotline for emergency situation. The BMW M2 Competition is available in Alpine White, Black Sapphire Metallic, Long Beach Blue Metallic, and Hockenheim Silver Metallic paired with Black Dakota Leather upholstery with blue contrast stitching, or in Sunset Orange Metallic paired with Black Dakota Leather with orange contrast stitching.
