BMW 5 Series line-up refreshed and improved
BMW’s updated 5 Series range comprises 3 versions: the 520 in diesel and petrol as well as the top-of-the-line 528i M Sport. A glimpse at the updated 5 Series entails re-worked front apron, air inlets and side indicators that’s integrated into the mirrors. Whereas, slimmer lights with LED light banks make an impressionable statement at the rear. Furthermore, adapative LED headlights and foglights are standard equipment across the variant.
In its interior offering, new details in the new BMW 5 Series provide a refined premium impression and increased functionality. In all models, the Control Display of the standard iDrive operating system is now bordered on both sides by high-quality chrome trim strips. Further to this, the storage compartments and cup holders in the center console of the sedan now have increased capacity.
Generous levels of space, exquisite materials and high-quality workmanship all contribute to the premium ambience characteristic of the new BMW 5 Series as do exclusive interior design details like the standard iDrive and the black-panel technology of the instrument cluster and automatic climate control system’s display. As in all BMWs, these features are not to be missed; Multifunctional Instrument Display with a 10.25 inch monitor (new for the updated 5 Series), BMW Navigation system Professional, the iDrive Touch Controller, the familiar circular speedometer and rev counter, ConnectedDrive Apps, and HUD (Head-up Display) for the top-of-the-line 5 Series only.
A 2.0-liter engine with TwinPower Turbo is utilized for all three 5 Series versions. The 520 petrol and 520d do 184 hp at 6,250 rpm/270Nm at 1,250 rpm and 184hp/380 Nm at 1,750 rpm, respectively. The petrol version sprints from 0-100km/h in 7.9 seconds with a top speed of 233 km/h and records fuel savings of 6.2l per 100 km and CO2 emissions of only 144 grams per km, while the diesel does the century mark in 7.9 secs with a top speed of 250km/h, and records fuel savings of 4.5l per 100 km with CO2 emissions of 119 grams per km. The top range 528i M Sport goes through the roof with a horsepower of 245 at 6,500 rpm and torque of 350 Nm at 1,250 rpm. The M Sport 5 Series achieves acceleration from 0-100km in 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 250km/h, and records fuel savings of 6.5 l per 100 km with CO2 emissions of 152 grams per km.
With new functions of the ECO PRO mode which are included as standard and accessible via the Driving Experience Control, the updated 5 Series enables drivers to freewheel or “sail” at speeds of up to 160 km/h. When the driver takes his or her foot off the accelerator without braking, the drivetrain is uncoupled, allowing the car to “sail” with minimal fuel consumption. The new BMW 5 series also comes with a Route-Ahead Assistant working in combination with the Navigation System Professional to tell drivers to ease off the accelerator at the right time before entering bends, thus enabling efficient sailing.
