Drifting with the All-electric Nissan LEAF

You’ve heard of the Nissan LEAF all-electric, which arrived on the scene in 2010. Did you know that the LEAF could drift? Nissan has pit the LEAF in the hands of a pro drifter to find out.

Nissan LEAF in 2019 has a more powerful motor to churn out 150 PS and 320 Nm. The LEAF is one of the first mass-produced all-electric vehicles made available in Malaysia by the folks at Nissan Malaysia. But did you ever know that the LEAF actually drifts?

How do you drift an all-electric car?

Many people associate electric vehicles (EVs) with clean technology, charging infrastructure, and driving range. It’s less-known that EVs deliver an exciting driving experience. To demonstrate the strength of electric mobility, Nissan recently challenged a professional stunt driver to drift with the LEAF.

Drifting is usually performed by fuel-powered sports cars, but Nissan wanted to try something different. In an unlikely pairing of adrenaline-inducing drifts and electric mobility, the Nissan LEAF demonstrated with ease its ability to produce both maximum torque and force, while delivering virtually silent donuts and burnouts.

How is it possible to drift in a Nissan LEAF? The LEAF has a Drag Co-efficient of 0.28 and is curated as a sleek and dynamic EV. Its signature attributes include new diamond holographic grille, boomerang-shaped LED DRLs, two-tone body paint with floating roof and 17-inch diamond-cut Turbine wheels.

Drifting is made easy with the LEAF’s sporty flat-bottom steering in leather. The pro drifter stares at the EV’s  7” multi-info display, while the leather alcantara seat grips tight when he makes his moves. Boot space Is 435 liters, expandable up to 1,176 liters. There’s even a programmable Climate Control timer to keep the drifter cool at the most crucial moments. The cabin is decked out in black or grey, depending on your preference. 

The Malaysian market saw the debut of the new-generation LEAF in late July. The 2019 LEAF has a new e-powertrain that produces 150PS (110kW) and 320Nm. A 40kWh lithium-ion battery is placed under the chassis to give it a lower center gravity.

With the improvements made from the previous generation, the LEAF could now go 311km (NEDC). Recharging is possible via a wall charger, up to 7 hours for full charge, or quick charger.

A new innovation that comes with the latest LEAF is the e-Pedal. e-Pedal allows the driver to everything with one pedal, literally. You could accelerate, decelerate and stop by pressing and lift your foot off a pedal. Sounds too good to be true?

The second innovation is the bi-directional charging. This future proof technology allows energy sharing with the LEAF’s onboard battery.

There are a myriad of safety features and drivers assistance systems for the Nissan LEAF, part of the Nissan Safety Shield program.

For the Malaysian market, the LEAF comes with two-tone scheme in Pearl White/ Deep Blue Pearl roof or Magnetic Red/Super Black roof. The one hue options are Brilliant Silver, Super Black, Gun Metal Grey and Deep Blue Pearl. The Nissan LEAF has a price tag of RM 188,888.
