In a bid to further elevate the excitement of the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, Ducati Malaysia (Next Bike) together with the Ducati Corse MotoGP Team, held an exclusive Gala Night at M.Marini Grand Caffe in the Capital City, Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.
Taking his second MotoGP win in Sepang in 2016, 2004 125 Champion Andrea Dovizioso has been in MotoGP since an incredible rookie season in 2008, where he was top independent team rider and fifth overall. His first victory came at Donington in 2009, before the Italian moved to the Ducati Team. A key part of Ducati’s journey back to the top, ‘DesmoDovi’ is one of the hardest to overtake on the brakes, and
one of the cleanest competitors in battle. The Italian remains with the Borgo Panigale factory team in 2017 as his long seasons of hard work see the bike more-and-more competitive and a consistent frontrunner.
Former champion Jorge Lorenzo has so far taken three of those crowns in the premier class, in 2010, 2012 and 2015. Graduating to MotoGP after back-to-back 250 championships, Lorenzo was on pole for his first MotoGP race in 2008 and set a new lap record, before winning his third GP at Estoril in his rookie year. Defeating teammate Valentino Rossi in 2010 to take his first MotoGP championship, Lorenzo then beat Casey Stoner to the crown in 2012 before just losing out to Marc Marquez in 2013, taking the title fight down to the wire in Valencia despite twice breaking his collarbone; famously riding to P5 in Assen the day after surgery. In 2015, the ‘Spartan’ was back to full power and faced down teammate Rossi for the title once again, sealing the championship with a spectacular win from pole in the final race of the year. 2016 saw Lorenzo third in the Championship with another four victories, including the season finale in Valencia.
For 2017, the Mallorcan takes on an incredible challenge in a new era of his career: after more than 40 victories and 100 podiums, Lorenzo switches to Ducati to do what only Stoner has managed, fight for the title on the “Borgo Panigale” machine.
Apart from signing autographs for customers, club members and selected media, the two riders also left their signatures on a limited production Ducati 1299 Superleggera. Only 500 examples of the Ducati 1299 Superleggera were built for the worldwide market, and only one available for viewing in the country.
The Ducati 1299 Superleggera is the first standard street bike with carbon fiber frame, swinging arm, subframe and wheels. It is the greatest expression of engineering, technology and performance ever put into mass production by a motorcycle manufacturer. The fairing, also made of carbon fibre, is just the tip of the iceberg of a unique project that only a brand like Ducati with racing in its DNA could accomplish. In fact, under the fairing hides the most powerful version of the Superquadro. With its 215 horsepower, the Desmodromic EURO 4 engine on the 1299 Superleggera is the most powerful twin-cylinder ever produced, representing the best of Ducati technology.
The exclusivity of the 1299 Superleggera is underlined by the new electronic package that uses an inertial platform system with six axes (6D IMU – Inertial Measurement Unit) to manage the electronic controls that on this bike rise to a level of primacy. This system has made it possible to further develop the Ducati Traction Control EVO (DTC EVO) presented on the 1299 Panigale S Anniversario thanks to the introduction of the Ducati Slide Control (DSC) which ensures even better performance when exiting corners.
The 1299 Superleggera is also the first Ducati Superbike to be equipped with Ducati Power Launch (DPL), as well as the Engine Brake Control (EBC) already present on previous versions, reaching the incredible dry weight of 156 kg.
During the MotoGP weekend, Ducati M’sia has teamed up with their global partners to set up an elaborate expression of the brand at the grandstand area of Sepang track featuring their latest merchandise and official apparel, riding gear and lifestyle wear. Ducati also have a booth at the Hillstand, where fans can experience the Scrambler Ducati lifestyle.
