At the recent KLIMS ’13, ETCM (Edaran Tan Chong Motor) announced that the LEAF 100 percent electric car would go on sale after premiere in the country in mid-2012.

ETCM intiated a domestically-themed ‘Journey to Zero Emissions’ ambassador campaign through the third and fourth quarters of the past year to create further branding sentiments about the onset of electric cars. Thus fast forward to December, ETCM has finally made available the LEAF for distribution. The first customers of the Nissan LEAF are Peter Mun and an anonymous customer, who received their keys to their brand new Nissan LEAFs at the ETCM Petaling Jaya dealership last week. Mun was provided a detailed operational brief on his electric car, prior to an initial drive on the LEAF. “My family and I are very eco-conscious which explains why we were very excited when we got to know that the Nissan LEAF was finally available in the country,” the first LEAF owner reiterated his excitement. “My family practices recycling as part of our lifestyle and we even collect rainwater to water our plants, clean the house, wash our clothes as well as clean our cars.”

The company director also said that he would get his employees to utilize his brand new LEAF as a company car. He would like his employees to practice cost-saving measures, he further commented, “I will be getting my employees to utilize this LEAF as a company car as it is definitely cost-saving – there is no need to stop for petrol top-ups and no more worries about increases in fuel prices either! It feels good to know that we are doing something to contribute to the betterment of the environment. The best part about the LEAF is that it produces zero-emissions which is definitely kind to the environment.”

Prior to the handover to its first customers, ETCM had installed two Electric Vehicle (EV) charger units; one at the owner’s home garage and another one at his office compound; in the case of Mun. The purchase of a Nissan LEAF now includes a complimentary EV charger that will be installed by ETCM at no extra costs at the owner’s preferred location. Other charging points in country initiated by ETCM and First Energy Networks are available in the Klang Valley, Penang, Malacca and Johor Bahru vicinities. There are currently 15 EV charging stations and more, very soon.
