Ferrari 458 Speciale: the star of the inaugural Ferrari Days at Sepang

The Ferrari 458 Speciale was previously featured on prior to the Frankfurt Motor Show. Today at the Sepang International Circuit, domestic Ferrari distributors Naza Italia finally brought forth the 458 Speciale for Supercars enthusiasts in the country. The Ferrari Speciale 458 Speciale is the main attraction at the inaugural Ferrari Days over the weekend. Other star attractions include the Italia, Spider versions of the 458, 599XX, F2001 and F2007 Formula 1 cars, and an FXX; probably its first ever appearance in the country. (click to enlarge)

From its transition of the regular 458 Italia to the Speciale, the special edition receives due updates in various departments, i.e. powertrain, aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics. For aerodynamics, the 458 Speciale gets the advanced active aerodynamics for the very first time. With removable front and rear aero. elements, the 458 Speciale gets a more balanced downforce and an optimized drag reduction. This translates to the 458 Speciale being the the most aerodynamically efficient range production sports car, with an E Index of 1.5.

A Ferrari 458 with Special trims, with most powerful NA V8 ever

Design-wise, the 458 Speciale differs very little to the Italia version; with the exception of center black and white strip that stretches from the engine hood’s tip to the edge of the car’s rear wing. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres hold the Super Sports firmly to the ground.

Ferrari has now built its most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 ever (605 cv) for the 458 Speciale with an extraordinary specific power output of 135 cv/l , the highest ever achieved by a road-going naturally aspirated engine. Thanks to an equally exceptional weight/power ratio of just 2.13 kg/cv, the 458 Speciale can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.0 (0-200 km/h in 9.1) and also clocked a lap time of just 1:23.5 at the Fiorano Circuit.

One of the most innovative content of the 458 Speciale is the Side Slip angle Control system (SSC) which makes it easier to achieve car control on the limit, thereby greatly improving driving emotions. Thanks to the development of an accurate new algorithm SSC performs instant-to-instant analysis of the car’s side slip, comparing it with the target value and then optimizing both torque management (via integration with F1-Trac traction control) and torque distribution between the two wheels (via integration with the E-Diff electronic differential). Interestingly, the 458 Speciale has the fastest response time (0.060 s) and highest lateral acceleration (1.33 g) in the Ferrari line-up.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale is priced at a reasonable introductory tag of RM1,238,800.00, excluding duty and options.
