At the IF Design Awards 2019, the Ferrari Monza SP1 has been recognized as a Gold Award recipient. Ferrari had several models recognized by IF Design, including the Ferrari Portofino, 488 Pista and SP38. The Ferrari Monza SP1 first appeared at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.
The Ferrari Monza SP1, like its two-seater sister SP2 model, offers a reinterpretation of the 1950s barchetta with a “classic perfection that also hints at the future, as mentioned in the jurors’ motivation for the award. The result is a single-seater road car that stands out because of its unique asymmetric layout, the ‘monolithic’ profile of the bodywork and the purity of its highly iconic design.

What’s makes the Monza SP1 stand out at the IF Design? First the car was an Icon and introduced as a special limited series for clients and collectors. The Monza SP1 was inspired by barchettas of the 1950s which were driven to victory in international motor sport not just by official works team drivers from Ferrari.
The Styling of the Monza SP1 is fairly simple, it hails from Ferrari’s rich heritage in racing. The overall idea of design is to break up the volume into two shells: an upper cover and a lower hull. Ferrari Syling Center guys gave it a modern single-seater impression for a new generation of gentlemen drivers. Prominent highlights like elegant forms, wing-profile, all-carbon-fiber bodyshell, minimalist silhouette, and last but not least, the sculptural rear diffuser. The rear lights becomes a single line, giving it a modern look This form takes inspiration from the 750 Monza and 375 MM.
The flank’s precise lines and scooped side air vents, together with the front bumper enhance and aimplify the color contrast between the black carbon-fiber of the sills and the rest of bodywork. The effect gives the car a clean look. At front-end, the car is instantly recognizable as a Ferrari; from the fine mesh radiator grille which itself is underscored by the three-dimensional structure beneath it with its two prominent air intakes. The entire front of the car looks as if it is draped, cloaked and enveloped by the surface treatment. Particular attention is lavished on the design of the compact doors which open upwards.
The exterior is completed by sculptural 21-inch five-spoke wheels that were designed specifically to compliment the minimalist lines of the two cars.
Moving inside, the Monza SP1 is all about the driver cockpit. The single-piece seat is decked in leather, inspired from the 812 Superfast.
Power to go with Finesse
The engine in the Monza SP1 is derived directly from that of the 812 Superfast, with optimized fluid-dynamics in the intake ducts to deliver even higher performance. The V12 powerplant gives massive output and a dose of maximum torque available. The engine is paired to a dual-clutch transmission. Like the 812 Superfast, the Monza SP1 share the excellent acceleration characteristics (0-100 km/h in 2.9 sec and 0-200 in 7.9 sec) and braking performance (100-0 km/h in 32 m).
