In 2010, the then Ford Malaysia contemplated about bringing in that generation’s Focus ST. The idea would go into the rubbish bin due to price and government policies. Ford Malaysia was eventually dissolved and became Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC). The bread and butter of Ford in Malaysia has always been and will continue to be the Ranger pick up. When SDAC took over they introduced plenty of new Ford models for the local market such as, the Fiesta. Mondeo, Kuga, Ecosport SUV, and yes, the Focus. SDAC even dabbled with limited units of the Ford Mustang in its 2.3- and 5.0-liter variants for a little while, two years ago. These models had a ton of exposure during its active years, but sadly due to relatively low acceptance rate SDAC had little options but to forget these models and focus solely on the Ranger.
Elsewhere in the world, Ford isn’t doing great but they’re keeping up with the trend. The Blue Oval continues strong runs in the U.S. and U.K. with the Fiesta, Focus and Mustang in the EcoBoost era. The Fiesta ST grabbed best hot hatch honors last year and this year, it was the Focus ST’s turn. The Focus ST is powered by a ‘strong and tuneful’ 2.3-liter EcoBoost. That’s not the only thing favored by the media and buyers, the Focus ST is revered for its braking and grip ability. In the words of Ford’s spokesperson, the Focus ST has a “brilliantly integrated diff and well-chosen adaptive damping”. This translates to dynamic driving at its best and giving the driver the confidence to shred corners.
The latest generation Ford Focus ST has tallied 1,700 units sold in the U.K. since it came out in early 2019. Even the cops want a piece of the Focus ST as evaluations of the 155mph Focus ST estate as police patrol car gets underway.
The spirit of Ford’s most well-known models lives on in Malaysia, although most have all but disappeared from the local scene. There are still strong followings for the Fiesta and Focus by owners of the models’ previous generations. The grey market might be able to help to ship a few Focus STs into the country if there’s a good demand for it.
