The Toyota FT-1 Sports Coupe concept raised a storm of approval when it first appeared at this year’s NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) and then went on to prove its performance in the virtual speed world of the GT6 (Gran Turismo 6). It’s Toyota intentions to utilize the FT1 to appease to the diehards; both GT fans and authentic performance car enthusiasts.

The Toyota FT-1 concept is a spiritual pacecar for the Japanese marque’s future design motives and represents the vision of the ultimate high-performance sports car; old timers would remember its close resemblance the great Toyota Supra. Its name is derived from Future Toyota (FT), and the number “1” as in ultimate.

A bold interpretation of future design in the Toyota FT-1 Sports Coupe Concept

The latest interpretation of the show-stopping concept coupe features new graphite paintwork in place of the vibrant red featured on the original concept. Basic shape and architecture of the FT-1 now encompass extra cooling and downforce elements, bringing out the concept’s Vision guise, thanks to the CALTY ‘function scuplting’ design process. Details include wider wheelarches to accommodate the larger tyres needed for extreme grip; enlarged air intakes for increased cooling; and a larger rear wing and front Canard fins to generate greater downforce. There’s also a bigger rear diffuser housing multiple fins, set further back to create a cleaner airflow.

On the inside, various treatments generated from the designers’ inspired superhero flicks have been instilled: saddle tan leather elements, high tech performance materials, and even color trimmings that match superheroes’ costumes. To achieve the FT-1’s advanced-looking, intricately detailed interior, Toyota’s CALTY design team in California compared leather thicknesses, grain sizes and textures to find the perfect combination. Raised metal mesh provides ventilation for the seats, while also lending a more textural, bold effect that compliments the cabin’s metal accents. An embossed pattern on the instrument panel leather creates a 3-D, technical look.

From September, players of the GT6 will able to download three different versions of the FT-1: both red and graphite versions, together with the high-performance ‘Vision GT’ edition.
