Honda Malaysia today announced a product update for Driver Airbag inflator involving a total of 58,140 units of several core Honda models. Owners are urged to take note of the Honda models recalled for the airbag replacement, as advised by Honda Malaysia. This is a major recall on the driver’s airbag inflator initiated by Honda Malaysia.
The Honda models recalled are: Honda City, year 2011 – 2013 as many as 33,668 units; Civic 2011, 1,499; CR-V 2011, 3,420; Jazz and Jazz Hybrid 2012-13, 16651; Insight 2012-13, 2,140; and Stream 2012 – 13, 762. This product update is necessary to replace the driver airbag inflator with newly produced inflators. And the update is deemed necessary as a proactive measure taken by Honda Malaysia to ensure owners’ safety.
Honda Malaysia regrets the inconvenience caused to all affected customer and the organization affirms that all current selling models are not affected by this product update.
All affected owners and customers will be informed via notification letters, which will include details of the product update. Customers who receive the letter are advised to send their vehicles to the nearest authorized Honda dealer for inspection. Replacement works will be carried out once parts are ready. Cost of parts and labor related to the product update will be borne by Honda Malaysia
Honda Malaysia continues to urge owners of Honda vehicles affected by the driver airbag product update to get their vehicles checked and parts replaced at any authorized Honda dealers as soon as possible upon receipt of the notification letters.
Previously, Honda has confirmed that the Takata single stage (SDI) driver’s airbag inflators ruptured in two crashes in April and May in Malaysia. Both crashes resulted in the tragic deaths of the drivers in Sabah and Kedah. In Sabah, after an inspection with the Royal Malaysian Police, the Takata single stage (SDI) driver’s airbag inflator ruptured in the crash of a 2006 Honda City on 16 April. The second case happened in Kedah involving the crash of a 2003 Honda City on 1 May. The vehicle involved in this crash was included in a Malaysian Product Update (recall), requiring replacement of the SDI inflator of the Takata driver’s front airbag.
