Honda CR-Z gets updated exterior and interior elements
The refreshed CR-Z is also the first variant of the several Honda variants to be revealed for the year.
For approximately two years, the Honda CR-Z reigns as Honda Malaysia most popular Hybrid variants which include the Honda Jazz Hybrid, the first locally assembled Honda Hybrid variant in Malaysia, the Honda Insight and Honda Civic Hybrid. To date, the Honda Hybrid range has sold for some 14,600 units, and the CR-Z makes up 2,500 units or 20 % of the Honda Hybrids repertoire. Needless to mention, the figures pushed Honda to the number one spot in the Hybrid segment. Due to its compact body and sport hatch exterior motif as well hybrid powertrain, the CR-Z initially got a lukewarm response from domestic citizens. The Sport hatch’s appeal soon picked up momentum from April 2012 onwards, especially among young go-getters and the middle income group.
The current Honda CR-Z receives several exterior updates such as, HID Lights, Black-mesh front grille, brigther daytime running lights, clearcoat LED rear lights and a more pronounced diffuser. Two CR-Z variants, the 6-speed manual transmission and CVT (Continuous Variable Timing) with 7-speed steering shifters are simultaneously available in the market.
Inside, the entire layout remains similar to the previous generation. More prominent to the eyes are red and black interior scheme at a glance, including the semi-leather Seats with red stitches, and red-stitched steering and gear knob.
The Honda CR-Z still carries a 1.5L i-VTEC IMA powerplant, but with a new and higher output lithium ion battery (144W) instead of the previous ni-MH battery (100W). The lithium ion battery is able to increase 2 times the energy capacity output compared to the ni-MH battery. Coupled the enhanced battery that is lighter and more compact and the IMA hybrid system, the car gets sufficient power output increase by as much as 15% compared to the previous variant. A significant addition to driving dynamics is the Sport Plus mode which enables a more exhilarating drive. Honda Malaysia claims that the updated CR-Z’s maximum boost could match that of V6 3.0-liter cars.
The 3-mode drive option – Normal, Econ and Sport – is still in place to allow the driver to select how the car accelerates, and characteristics like, stiffness of the steering, idle stop timing, climate control and IMA assistance. Add the Sport + into the foray, the driver will discover that the CR-Z offers a more effective overtaking maneuver.
In terms of the safety equipment, the updated CR-Z is equipped with Dual Front SRS Airbags, Side Curtain & Side Airbags with Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), G-Force Control Technology (G-CON), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE).
Honda Malaysia expects to deliver some 300 units of the CR-Z a month, its Managing Director and CEO Yoichiro Ueno explained, “The new CR-Z is an ideal balance of technology, performance and design. With its enhanced features and styling, it is now even sportier in looks, truly embodying the concept of a “Sport Hybrid.”
He added, “The new CR-Z will give an ultimate joy of driving experience to Malaysian car enthusiasts. It is the ideal car for those who recognize the value of advanced technology, desire an eye-catching car and care for the environment.”
