Jaguar XE is the brand’s bonafide mid-size sports sedan

Jag_XE_Range Jaguar has finally unleashed the anticipated XE mid-size sports sedan, the newest variant to join the British Premium car manufacturer’s line-up. The all-new Jaguar XE is positioned just below the XF and XJ variants. It has a lightweight construction, streamlined styling, luxurious interior and exemplary ride and handling.

There are five trim lines for the Jaguar XE: SE, Prestige, Portfolio, R-Sport and S; each with unique exterior, interior fixtures and everything else.

Inspired from the iconic Mk II, the XE is a four-door sports sedan and the only in its class to use an aluminium-intensive monocoque. The XE was also developed in parallel with Jaguar’s lightweight, modular vehicle architecture.

At the front, the very steeply raked windscreen and rising waistline accentuate the streamlined, coupé-like profile. And thanks to the signature J-Blade DRLs, the sports sedan is instantly recognizable. In the rear lights, a horizontal line intersecting a roundel is an iconic styling feature inherited from the iconic Jaguar E-type, and now present also on the F-TYPE sports car. Bi-Xenons with DRLs are available for the XE Portfolio level and up. The base XE starts with 17-inch wheels and the range topping XE S is instilled 19-inch wheels. The higher level R-Sport receives a rear spoiler and chrome treatment for the side power vents, while the XE S has a front bumper with enlarged intakes, side sill extensions, rear spoiler, gloss black rear valance and red brake calipers.

In dimensions, the Jaguar XE has a long wheelbase (2,835mm) on the back of a 4,672mm length. The sports sedan’s width is 2,075mm and height stands at 1,416mm. Front and rear tracks are 1,607 and 1,608mm in perspective, while kerb weight comes in between 1,474 kilograms (manual transmission) and 1,500 kgs (auto).

Interior-wise, the spacious cabin cocoons front seat passengers with a deep center console, creating a cockpit-like feel. Driver and occupants are kept entertained by the 8-inch touchscreen with InControl infotainment system. A Meridian 11-speaker system is included in the XE Portfolio level and up for sheer Premium entertainment.

The driver stares at the sweeping curves of the instrument panel, and of course, the car is initiated with Jaguar’s unique rotary drive selector which rises up from the console.

The contour-hugging front seats are mounted low, creating a sports-car like driving position with heating and cooling options and 14-way power adjustment. Rear passengers get seats with heaters and, when the 40:20:40 split-fold seats, a first for a Jaguar, are folded down, a boot space of 450 liters is afforded. Technical fabrics, fine-grain leathers and contrasting twin-needle stitching give the cabin a bespoke quality. In addition, trimmings with Gloss black, textured aluminium, contemporary wood veneers, and carbon-fiber present a luxurious, handcrafted feel. Trimmings differ according to the XE range, view the below listings for information.

The starting Jaguar XE range are available with the first Ingenium 2.0-liter diesel engines that provide two power and torque outputs: 163PS/380Nm and 180PS/430Nm. The 163PS version makes the XE the most fuel-efficient Jaguar ever, achieving 26.5 km/l (75mpg) and 99g/km CO2 on the European combined cycle. Next up, the 2.0-liter turbocharged powerplant offers two uprated ratings of 200PS/280Nm and 240PS/340Nm. And last but not least, the top flight XE S takes up a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 with 90-degree V-angle for a massive 340 PS and 450 Nm of torque. That means the XE S punches from 0 – 100 km/h in about 5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 249 km/h (155mph). Depending on markets, the XE is paired to either a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission.

The XE is the stiffest, most aerodynamic Jaguar sedan car ever built. It is also the first Jaguar to be equipped with electric power steering, tuned to provide exceptional responsiveness and feel but with lower energy consumption than hydraulic systems. It is also the first Jaguar built using high-strength aluminium alloy (RC5754), made from recycled material.

While most premium sports sedan makes are still on McPherson struts and multi-link, the new XE takes it to the next level thanks to double wishbone front suspension, along with the Integral Link rear suspension. Braking on the XE relies the latest-generation electronic brake system controller that works with Torque Vectoring. Plus, lightweight sliding calipers and large discs on the front (ventilated) and rear, with diameters from 316mm to 350mm and 300mm to 325mm respectively. Cooling to the front discs is enabled by the suspension-mounted ducts, which channel air to the center of the rotors through apertures in the back plate.

The XE has some of the most advanced driver assistance systems available, such as the All Surface Progress Control (ASPC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Traffic Sign Recognition systems and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC); just to name a few.
