allcarschannel Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia today kicked off the year with announcement of the locally-assembled ASX compact SUV at its Segambut plant in the Capital City. The first Mitsubishi ASX rolled off the TCMA (Tan Chong Motors Assemblies) line during a special ceremony held at the plant to herald the start of the variant’s production in the country.

The fully imported Mitsubishi ASX which debut in November 2010 and achieved some 3,000 units thus far, is only available in a two-wheel drive version, now the CKD version opens up two options for compact SUV enthusiasts; in either a 2WD or 4WD. MMM (Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia) and TCMA plans to churn about 5,000 units of the locally-assembled ASX per year. The ASX also happens to be the first locally-assembled Mitsubishi variant in the country. Other than that, the Mitsubishi ASX CKD program is a part of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s major strategic pillar to concentrate business resources via the “New Stage 2016” business plan on emerging markets in ASEAN. The New Stage 2016 focuses mainly on beefing up Mitsubishi’s base in ASEAN, which directly points to production and sales.

Locally-assembled Mitsubishi ASX encapsulates the essence of a versatile SUV

Mitsubishi’s first CKD variant is a true compact SUV that serves young families who desire style and substance in a vehicle. Developed with utility and practicality in mind, the ASX offers intricacies of a sedan such as high ride point, easy maneuvering, comfort and a balanced handling.

The 2014 ASX mid-size SUV is powered by a 2.0-liter MIVEC engine with 150 PS of power and 197 Nm of torque. Paired to a smooth INVECS-III CVT (continuous variable transmission) with Sports Mode, the ASX is deemed a go-getter SUV for the adventurous at heart.

Safety wise, the ASX comes with three airbags, ABS and EBD are standard across the range, while the 4WD variant adds on Traction Control, Active Stability Control (ASC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA). The agile and easy handling ASX has a class leading turning radius of 5.3 meters.

Both CKD ASX variants are equipped with automatic lights and wipers (auto rain and light sensors), leather seats, GPS navigation, front and rear parking sensors with reverse camera, automatic air conditioning and a high contrast instrument panel. On top of that, the 4WD ASX gets a panoramic roof, steering paddle shifters, push start button and solar/security window tint.

MMM targets about 400 units of the ASX per month and a decent slice of the pie of 20 percent in the domestic mid-sized SUV market. Overall, MMM tallied 12,600 units in their last fiscal year; the Mitsubishi variants comprised of the Mirage compact hatchback, Lancer GT sedan, imported ASX, Triton pick-up trucks, Pajero line-up, i-MIEV electric car and the Attrage. MMM holds 4 percent share in the non-national make segment, which puts them in the top five of non-national makes. In after sales and dealership network, MMM operates 57 showrooms, with 40 3S centers, and 50 service centers nationwide. Five more showrooms are expected by the end of this year.
