Now, the infusion of the KODO – Soul of Motion design and SKYACTIV Technology suite have radically changed to MX-5 altogether, however the new roadster from Mazda remains a compact open-top and two-seater. It also takes up a similar front-midship engine, rear-wheel drive configuration, 50:50 front-rear weight distribution and low yaw inertia. Mazda MX-5: Love Live the Roadster
To kick things off, the new Mazda MX-5 is so visually appealing that it nailed the 2015 Red Dot Design Award for Best of the Best Product Design. ‘Nuff said, hardly, the Mazda MX-5 with KODO impression gives an expression of stability that makes the Roadster appear as though it is firmly gripping the road surface. Additionally, the roadster’s contours present reflections off the body’s surfaces to make the car look alive as well as create a sense of emotional attachment. To impart a sense of speed, the lines from the headlights converge at the front fenders and to the front of the rear tyres, which then sweep over the rear fenders. The new MX-5’s desired compact body is attributed to a shorter overall body length (3,915mm), and the slight decrease of the front and rear overhangs help achieve a slender width (1,735mm); although visually the Roadster looks more elongated than its predecessor. Even the wheelbase (2,310mm) has been reduced, compared to the third-generation Mazda Roadster.
Achieving beautiful proportions while working with a shorter overall length required designers to lower the height of the Roadster, which stands 1,230mm. With the reduced height, the bonnet gets a more slanted outlook and the seats were able to incorporate a lower hip-point. For the fourth-generation MX-5, the Roadster gets an overall weight reduction, now weighing in at 1,080 kilograms. The manually-adjustable soft-top, replacing the hard cover, plays a major part in the Roadster’s weight reduction.
The new Mazda MX-5 presents an interior that supposedly brings smiles every time you step into the Roadster and gets the heart pounding. One example is how the body panels wrap around to extend right into the door trim and thereby dissolve the visual boundaries between the vehicle’s interior and exterior. In addition to providing a feeling of open space as only possible with an open-top body, the lines emphasize a feeling of oneness between the driver and car. Attention is also paid to the shape of the door trim, more compact quarter windows and the positioning of tachometer and steering. The tacho and steering forms a perfect symmetry between the round climate-control louvers to the right and left of the instrument cluster. The new MX-5, like most Mazda variants, has the unmistakable driver-oriented cockpit.
Interior highlights for the new MX-5 distributed in the country include; 7-inch touch screen with MZD Connect, BOSE Audio System with 9 speakers, leather steering with paddle shifters, leather seats and upholstery, Push Start switch, Climate control, Auto cruise, Auto-dimming rear view mirror and Auto windshield wipers.
The new MX-5 is powered by a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter for an output of 158 hp at 6,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Power is transferred to the wheels via a SKYACTIV-DRIVE 6-speed transmission. Needless to say, the new MX-5 adopts SKYACTIV Technology and a longitudinal layout to match the rear-wheel drive configuration.
With a near-perfect weight distribution, the Roadster’s handling and agility on the prowl is further enhanced by the front’s double wishbones and rear’s multi-link suspension. Ventilated disc and solid disc form the braking package already instilled in the new Roadster.
