The MINI Cooper and Cooper S incorporate an improved ‘Power Suit’ that hints a bold, yet sporty ride. The Cooper has a regular or Chilli version, while the Cooper S is offered in regular and Wired edition. So, what’s up with the ‘Power Suit’? It denotes the classic proportions of iconic subcompact that dates back 55 years that culminate into today’s modern vehicle concept of the current Cooper and Cooper S. At a glance, the 2014 Coopers have an expanded outlook, with these dimensions: 3,821 (Cooper) and 3,850mm (Cooper S) in length, 1,727mm in width and 1,414mm height-wise. Compared to the 2nd-gen MINI Coopers, the latest ones are 98mm longer, 44mm wider and 7mm higher. Even, track width front and rear have been upped by 42mm and 34mm; that add up to 1,501mm for the Cooper and 1,485mm on the Cooper S. Rear boot space gets 51 liters more for up to 211 liters.
Cooper and Cooper S in third generation guise still resemble the classic proportions of the iconic MINI
Exterior-wise, the MINI Cooper is distinguished by radiator grille ribs surrounding the familiar grille, a tailgate handle in white aluminium and a high-gloss black bumper strip, as well as a chrome trim element for the exhaust pipe. With the Cooper S, the radiator grille gets the S emblem plus chrome surround and honeycomb pattern treatment, a bumper strip in anthracite and exhaust tailpipes positioned at the center. Headlights for the Coopers are typical MINI, but feature a wide chrome ring surround. LED headlights and foglights are on the cards for the Cooper S, while the regular Cooper is fitted with Halogens.
At the side, the Coopers have a dynamic wedge curvature thanks to the window graphic taper off the rear. There’s a visual link between the front and rear wheel arches, something admired by MINI enthusiasts. For the rear, both Cooper and Cooper S stay true to its iconic motif. Lastly, 16-inch Loop Spoke Silver rims are fitted on the Cooper and 17-inch Tentacle Spoke Silver rims are allocated for the Cooper S.
The inside is highlighted by the unmistakable horizontal structure of the cockpit and the circular contours of the air outlets, instruments and door trim elements. Dashboard highlights include the central instrument panel with MINI Connected, 6.5-inch screen for the Cooper and 8.8-inch screen for the Cooper S, a circular instrument cluster, start-stop switch (keyless entry) and three circular switches next to the steering. Other interior benefits for the base Cooper are Cloth Firework Carbon Black with Hazy Grey interior surfacing, Chrome Line Interior, manual air-conditioning, MINI Radio Basis with Bluetooth interface and steering with rain sensor and automatic lights control. Chilli Cooper gets Leather Cross Punch Carbon Black Upholstery with automatic dual zone a/c, Radio Visual boost and sports seats. On the Cooper S, standard amenities consist of Leather Cross Punch Carbon Black Upholstery with Black Checkered interior surfacing, Chrome Line Interior, headliners in Anthracite, interior rear view mirror with anti-dazzle, automatic 2 zone air-conditioning, Radio Visual boost, John Cooper Works leather multi-function steering and sports seats. Then there’s the Cooper S wired which has an extra center armrest and a 12-speaker Harmon Kardon HiFi sound system with voice control. To spruce up the circular instrument’s outer edge, there are 6 LED-colored options to choose from.
The MINI Cooper takes on a bi-turbo 1.5-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine that’s mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The regular MINI hits up to 136hp and 220Nm of torque, while the Cooper S does 192 hp and 280Nm thanks to a 2.0-liter bl-turbo powerplant. Top speed, 0 – 100 km/h dash, combined fuel consumption and emissions figures for the Cooper and Cooper S are; 210km/h & 233, 7.8 seconds & 6.7s, 4.7 liters per 100km & 5.4km per 100, and 109g/km & 125g/km. There are 3 new drive modes for the Coopers; standard MID, Sport and Green.
Impeccable safety features of the MINIs take these forms; Intelligent lightweight construction, resilient bearing structures, optimally designed deformation zones, a rigid passenger cell, multiple airbags, 3-point seat belts with belt tensioners and belt force limiters, ISOFIX, and a pyrotechnical trigger mechanism that works with impact absorbers to minimize the risk of injury to pedestrians.
