The much-talked about Mitsubishi Triton is making an anticipated return to the Borneo Safari for the second year running, according to a press statement by Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia. This time around, Mitsubishi Malaysia pits the Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel engine to challenge for the coveted Borneo Safari title, which has been scheduled to take place from 30 October until 6 November in the East Malaysia State of Sabah’s capital city Kota Kinabalu.
The Borneo Safari needs no introduction to the world of adventure, having established a reputation over the past 26 years as one of the world’s toughest 4X4 expeditions. Last season, Mitsubishi M’sia participated with a Triton to get a feel for the Borneo Safari’s toughest routes. On its inaugural participation, the Triton was sent into the Borneo Safari almost as a stock standard pick up. The purpose-built Triton thereafter completed several adventure drives in East Malaysia including the New Year 4×4 Jamboree event in Kuching and Bario, Sarawak as well as Kundasang, and the tip of Borneo in Sabah with local 4×4 enthusiasts respectively. Fast forward to the present season, Mitsubishi M’sia has up-the-ante with a total of three Tritons, including two units of the powerful Triton MIVEC Turbo Diesel.
Mitsubishi M’sia Chief Executive Officer Tomoyuki Shinnishi commented, “Last year, we were very delighted that the Triton VGT MT (Manual Transmission) had successfully completed the Borneo Safari! The event is known to be the world’s toughest 4X4 expeditions, hence we decided to rise up to the challenge and to conquer the trails of Borneo Safari once again, but with two additional Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine VGT AT (Automatic Transmission) and VGT MT (Manual Transmission) variant respectively.”
At the 2016 Borneo Safari, the Triton will participate as a corporate vehicle in the hands of domestic racer and lady drifter, Leona Chin. Remaining Tritons will be driven by press members, who are accompanied by 4×4 instructors. Alongside the regulars, six other Mitsubishi Triton owners will support the main contingent during the 8-day 4X4 expedition. “As a Mitsubishi Triton owner, I am excited to take on the Borneo Safari in the Triton. The Triton has proved itself through many tough situations with the new and powerful MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine. Being a first timer into the Borneo Safari, I am really looking forward to this gruelling event and I am confident that the Triton will be able to conquer the Borneo Safari once again this year!” Leona remarked.
The Borneo Safari is an arduous off-road event, taking the participants through various terrain challenges over eight days and seven nights. It is a challenge for the vehicles as well as the drivers and crews. The participating Triton is being outfitted with the compulsory equipment such as winch, protection bars, recovery points, extreme tyres, suspension and snorkel. The tyres for the Borneo Safari bound Tritons are fitted by Giti tyres.
The Borneo Safari will flag off at 9.30am from Sabah Tourism Board building at Jalan Gaya, Kota Kinabalu on 30 October. The convoy will then proceed to Kampung Penampang Baru for the opening Prologue Special Stages.
