|The much-touted new Mercedes-Benz A-Class which recently arrived on the domestic scene continues its road tour at the Publika Dutamas in Sri Hartamas this weekend, 5 – 7 July. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has made available two versions of the new A-Class: the A 200 BlueEFFICIENCY and A 250 Sport.|
Hailed as the most desirable compact Crossover yet, the 5-seater Mercedes-Benz A-Class stems from the coveted Concept A-Class which highlighted the Three-point Star’s new two-box design characteristics at one of the major International Motor shows. A forward low-slung front-end is matched with the two louvres with a central star and elaborated headlight details consisting LED strips, daytime running lights and indicators. The side of the A-Class is highly distinguishable with its black painted exterior mirror housings and 18-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, the A-Class has a unique mix of convex and concave surfaces and edges. The flared up shoulders, depicting the car’s broad width, is highlighted by the rear lights; depicted as to improve airflow for aerodynamic purposes.
The performance-oriented A 250 Sport is instilled AMG equipment line both inside and out for obvious reasons. Most prominent are the diamond radiator grille, red-trim AMG front and rear elements on the bumpers, highlight rings on the headlights and special 18-inch wheels. The A 250 Sport also has sports suspension for tauter handling during adventurous drives.
Interior-wise, it is all about the premium and plush effects inside the A-Class. The front upholstery consists of sport seats decked in Artico/fabric with black diamond pattern trims; the seats have adjustable, memory functions. The Nappa leather three-spoke steering is unmistakable, while related conveniences and amenities include an 6-disc Audio 20 Multimedia unit with 6 speakers, 14.7 cm diagonal TFT display with integrated 12-button keypad, and the easy-to-view instrument cluster with two large & one small dials in silver shade with red needles. With the optional Urban package, a chequered flag design is added into the instrument cluster’s scheme. A standard boot space of 341 liters is a regular fixture in the A-Class, and the cargo space can be expanded up to 1157 liters, with the 60:40 rear seats down.
The A 200 BlueEFFICIENCY takes up a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that enables a 156 hp at 5,300 rpm output and a respectable 250 Nm of torque. The standard A-Class with a best-in-class co-efficient drag of 0.26 Cd is paired to a 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission. The combination enables a top speed of 224 km/h and a 0 – 100 km/h dash in 8.3 seconds. Fuel efficiency and emissions ratings are 5.4 – 5.7l per 100km and 127-133 g/km respectively.
The A 250 Sport, as the name suggests, increases the boundaries with a 2.0-liter and 7G-DCT transmission powertrain. It pushes 211 hp at 5500 rpm and a torque of 350 Nm, translating to a top speed of 240 km/h and zero-to-hundred in 6.6 secs. Fuel efficiency is remarkably kept low at 6.4l/100km on a combined cycle.
Selected drive modes include “Economy”, “Sport” and “Manual” via a switch on the center console. The modes differ from one another in terms of shift characteristics and speed.
Both A-Class are equipped with a radar-based collision warning system called the Collision Prevention Assist with Adaptive Brake Assist. Relevant safety measures in the A-Class consist of Adaptive high beam assist (A 250 Sport only), Attention ASSIST (both models), Brake hold function (both), Hill-start assist (both), Active parking assist (both), Reverse camera (both), and Pre-SAFE (both).
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class A 200 retails for RM198,888, while the A 250 Sport goes for RM238,888; prices exlude insurance. Body colors for A 200 are; Cosmo Black, Polar Silver, Cirrus White, Mountain Grey, South Sea Blue and Jupiter Red, and for the A 250 Sport the color options include; Cosmo Black, Polar Silver, Cirrus White and Mountain Grey.
