New Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R smashes Nürburgring record

New Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R sets Nürburgring record for Front-wheel drive production car

New Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R has smashed the Nurburgring record for front-wheel drive production cars. The Megane R.S. destroyed the Nordschleife record in 07:40.100 on the 20.600 km lap, and a 07:45.389 reference time on the official whole lap of 20.832 km. The new Megane R.S. Trophy-R will debut at this weekend’s Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.

The Trophy-R has the same 300hp engine as the Megane R.S. Trophy, but weight reduction is significant with a decrease of up  to 130 kg, along with a reworked aerodynamics and chassis. It  simply translates to much improved power-to-weight ratio, better agility and sheer top  speed.

Inheriting all the goodies from the R.S. Trophy, the R.S. Trophy-R is created to be a race car; although developed in a relatively short time. Aside from much improved aerodynamics, the drive axles have been re-worked to make sure the car could pound the Nurburgring s kerbs and tough corners. After all, the 7:40 mark is pretty quick for any Megane R.S., up to this point.

The Megane R.S. has used the Nurburgring as proving ground for more than a decade. It started in 2008 with the very first record in the front-wheel-drive production car category: Megane R.S. R26.R completed the lap in 8:17’. A time that was shattered 3 years later, in 2011, by the second generation Megane R.S. Trophy version, in the hands of the car’s driver-builder, Laurent Hurgon (8:07.’97). In 2014, it passed under the 8-minute mark (7:54.36) for the first time with the Trophy-R version of the Megane III R.S. He was also the one who drove the latest generation of Megane R.S. Trophy-R to set this new reference time.

The compact sports car is slated to debut by the end of the year, as an exclusive limited edition of a few hundred units only. The Megane R.S. Trophy-R carries Akrapovič exhaust system, Brembo brakes, Bridgestone shods, Öhlins shock absorbers and Sabelt bucket seats, just to name a few.
