If you think you’ve seen the most affordable car in the country, think again. Introducing the new Perodua Axia, with a starting price from just RM24,600…
Perodua Axia is a worthy successor of the previous sub compact variants
After almost two years without a new variant, second national car makers Perodua has finally introduced its newest variant: the sub compact Axia. As a successor to the outgoing Viva and Kancil variants, the Perodua has made available four versions of the Axia, starting with the base E, then the G, SE and Advance.
Both E and G versions have inherited plenty of the MyVi’s exterior elements such as headlights and front bumper, although the 8-spoke wheels are deemed fresh. The rear takes on a new bumper, combination lights and rearguards to bring out an aggressive look. Meanwhile, the SE and especially the Advance Axia have a more pronounced chrome trimming that goes along with the one-piece like grille and standard fog lights. The front fascia is also highlighted by the eagle-eye projector headlights in the case of the Axia Advance. At the side, the regular Axia and special versions are differentiated by the side skirt, retractable side mirror and 5-double spoke wheels (14-inch). From the rear, there are; a sculpted bumper with reflectors, LED lights and third brake light spoiler (Axia Advance).
Moving to the interior, the Axia sits five Malaysian adults of smaller proportions easy, thanks to its 2,455mm wheelbase that’s been somewhat enlarged from the previous Perodua small car. Boot space is able to carry 260 liters, and there are ample small storage compartments, cup holders and hooks all around. Cabin features include amber illumination for the instrument cluster (Red for the special editions), fabric seats (leather for the Advance version), door trims based on material colors (special editions’ door trims are painted in silver), and a chrome seat back pocket for the special editions. The regular Axia has a basic radio CD player, with the SE and Advance editions getting CD with MP3, USB and Bluetooth compatibility and the multimedia with navigation. The advanced Axia also gets leather steering for a more comfortable grip.
The 1.0-liter DOHC Electronic Fuel Injection engine is paired to an Electronically Controlled Automatic transmission for a 49kW ouput and 90 Nm of torque. Manual transmission, though, is fitted for the base line Axia for cost reduction purposes. Fuel consumption is deemed the lowest ever for a Perodua variant at 21.6km/l, up to 20.1 km/l, on a 33 liter fuel tank capacity.
A variation of Safety features for the Axia include ABS with EBD, collision-resistant body, dual airbags, ISOFIX, 3-point seat belts, and nitty gritty items like anti-snatch hook, immobilizer and security window film.
