|Nasim, distributors of Peugeot cars, last night presented the all new Peugeot 208 at the artificial beachfront of Sunway Lagoon. The anticipated new Peugeot 208 is more than just a step up of the previous Peugeot compact, the 207; but a definite head turner that’s available in two versions: the 3-door and 5-door.|
As the pertinent successor to the popular Peugeot compacts 205, 206 and 207; the new Peugeot 208 is deemed as the Lion marque’s rejuvenation of its popular B-segment variant.
Globally, the new Peugeot 208’s reception has been overwhelming, with some 300,000 units delivered since its European debut last year. In the country, Nasim’s recent Peugeot 208 media preview and roadshow at the One Utama shopping mall have confirmed some 200 bookings. Nasim targets to deliver about 200 Peugeot 208s per month.
Weighing 150 kilograms lighter than the 207, the new Peugeot 208’s kerb weight of just 975 kg and improved silhouette for obvious aerodynamics reasons certainly draw a lot of attention at first glance. Add a host of new generation interior features, including the new dashboard design, the new Peugeot 208 is not only going to appease the driver but the passengers as well.
The new Peugeot 208’s prominent LEDs on the headlights intend to captivate onlookers. At the front, the ‘floating’grille, differs with the 3-door and 5-door version, either made of honeycomb materials or the customary black mesh with chrome accents. Two major front fascia highlights include an optimized size air intake and veritable spine across the hood. The new Peugeot 208 sculpted side brings out the front and rear wheel arches, the “nerve” line that runs from the front to the rear light, and the pushed back pillar, coupled with sloping silhouette with mood lighting panoramic roof, accentuates the car’s aerodynamics properties; this profile is essentially inherited from the Peugeot SR1 Concept. From the rear, the Peugeot 208 is defined by the articulate rear lights, which comprise three illuminated claws jammed into the boomerang-shaped housings. In dimensions, the new Peugeot 208 measures 2,004 mm in width and 1,460 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,538 mm. Front and rear overhangs have been shortened, exactly 6 cm and 1 cm less than the previous variant. Rims and tyres sizes are 17-inch for the 3-door version and 16-inch for the 5-door.
Inside the new Peugeot 208, the first things to notice are the huge ‘floating’ center screen, unique dashboard and rectangle-shaped instrument cluster that resembles premium Sunglasses. The compact’s interior offers no less day-to-day practicality, as well as ample storage compartments such as door pockets and a deep compartment in front of the gear lever for all your smartphones, small items and so forth. Boot space takes up a feasible 311 liters, and with the rear seats folded down, the boot space extends up to 1,152 liters.
The new Peugeot 208 has a Dual Variable Valve Lift 1.6 liter powerplant, similar to that of the Peugeot 308 VTi. Thanks to timing injection, the powerplant is able to churn a respectable 122 PS at 6,000 rpm and 160 Nm of torque at 4,250 rpm. Peugeot claims that the torque rating is available very uniformly, even at low engine speeds (2,000 rpm). The Peugeot 208 can achieve 140 Nm or 88 % capacity, enabling a wider operating range. Fuel consumption rating as per manufacturer’s specification is 6.7 liters per 100 km.
The Peugeot 208 handling and stability rely on pseudo-McPherson front suspension and the rear’s deformable cross member settings. Additionally, the Peugeot 208 is fitted with front brake discs (266 x 22 mm) and rear discs (249 x 9 mm) for dependable stopping power.
This Euro-NcAP 5-star recipient has a bunch of safety features; ESP, ASR (traction control), DSC (dynamic stability control), EBA (emergency braking assistance) and EBD (electronic brake distribution), and passively; 6 air bags, 2 Isofix locations with 3 anchorage points at the rear, active footrest, collapsible steering column and a retention pin.
