Proton has ascended to second place overall on the local automotive sales charts, following a rather bang-up performance last year. Aside from the industry shaker Proton X70, core models like Saga, Persona, Iriz and Exora have been key contributors to the sales hike.

In a latest release, the National carmaker is actively pursuing its objectives in the country of Brunei. Brunei has been one of the friendly countries to deal with Proton for a number of years. This led to the move of increasing more sales and marketing activities in that country where Proton introduced the X70 last July and more recently the other core models. Alongside its offcial distributor in Brunei Pad Motors. Proton is planning a major roadtour beginning 28 January.

What do all the above translate to? Proton is focusing on its increasing export market demands. Domestically, the National carmakers had a sales spike of 55,7 percent in 2019 and finished the year second overall in the total industry volume. Having secured a firm footing locally, what do they have in mind next? Well, that’s to increase its export volume to help boost overall sales. The goals for Proton in 2020 and beyond are; to be the best-selling brand in its home country and be no. 3 after Toyota and Honda in the Asian region by 2027. Obviously, export market is expected to spur these ambitious goals. Thanks to a blossoming relationship with its Chinese counterparts Geely, Proton is confident about its ambitious goals. Other than Brunei, Proton has its eyes set on key markets in the South East Asian region and greater Asia, eventually.

According to its CEO Li Chunrong, “The export market will play an increasingly important role in growing Proton’s annual sales. When we updated the Proton Iriz, Persona, Exora and Saga last year, we did so while taking in to account the needs of markets outside of Malaysia and today, three of those cars are now available in Brunei. It’s a good start to 2020 but as the year progresses, we will be looking to export our cars to more countries.”

Proton X70 production increase

As featured previously, Proton’s industry shaker, the X70, is expected to spearhead the resurgence into 2020. With model year 2020 versions already rolling down the production line at the new RM1.2 billion plant extension in Proton’s Tanjung Malim plant, the National brand now has the option of expanding the X70’s footprint to more regional markets.
