In Malaysia, the Fortuner has been a regular SUV fixture since 2005 and to date, has amassed some 20,000 units in sales all over the country. The second-generation Fortuner, available in 2.4VRZ and 2.7VRZ, has an all-new styling and tougher body structure.
In looks, the new Fortuner fairs way, way better than its predecessor, thanks to a refined front- and back-end. The front highlights a thin upper grille to match the front bumper and the dynamically-styled headlights (2.7VRZ with LED projectors and integrated DRLs and 2.4VRZ halogen and DRLs). Both versions’ headlights got Auto Light technology, while the 2.7 comes with puddle lights. The raked profile of the new Fortuner are highlighted by the side-stepper, roof railing, triangular-shaped C-pillar and 17- or 18-inch wheels (2.4 and 2.7). From the rear, the classy LED combination lights capture immediate attention from onlookers, then there’s the new Fortuner logo, high-mount stop light and powered tailgate. Further to that, Aero-stablizing fins on the door mirrors and light housings provide much improved airflow.
Inside, the new Fortuner has a bolder and more elegant impression, all attributed to soft-touch materials, metallic accents, wood grain-patterned trims and a refined center console. The Fortuner 2.7VRZ is fitted with an instrument cluster with optitron meters has plated rings, while the base Fortuner has backlit meters with plated rings. An Eco Light is added to the foray for good measures. A four-spoke telescopic steering is standard for both Fortuners, but the 2.7 receives paddle shifters, as well as a wood grain patterned and leather-wrapped steering. For upholstery, the Fortuner 2.7 has an 8-way adjustable driver seat and the 2.4, a 6-way type. Thanks to an overall height of 1,835mm and length of 4,795mm, occupants are guaranteed extra head- and leg-room. Interior highlights for the Fortuner comprise of full a/c climate control with odor-prevention feature, rear a/c vents for the high-end Fortuner, ample cupholders, 8-inch display (2.7) or standard audio head unit, Push Start switch and Smart Entry.
The new Fortuner 2.7-liter engine, from the first-gen Fortuner, offers a higher compression to boost output to 166 PS and 245 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The 2.4 Fortuner utilizes the Global Diesel engine type, offering an output of 150PS and a high torque of 400 Nm between 1,600 – 2,000 rpm. Both engines are paired to s 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2.7 Fortuner even has added drive modes, either Eco or Power.
Auto Disconnecting Differential are valid for both Fortuners to allow engagement of the front differential from two-wheel to four-wheel. And with the Electronic Transfer Dial, switching from 4X4, 4H or 2H has never been easier. Other worthy mentions for the new Fortuner are the Rear Differential Lock and A-TRC features.
In terms of Safety, the new Fortuner, recognized by Asean NCAP, is fitted with the typical ABS, EBD, Brake Assist (2,7VRZ), VSC with Traction Control, Emergency Stop Signal, Hill-start Assist, Trailer Sway Control and airbags (3 on the 2.4 and 7 on the 2.7), auto-retracting seatbelts and ISOFIX. In addition, the engine immobilizer is standard security feature for the new Fortuner. Optional accessories are available via UMWT dealerships.
There are six color options for the new Fortuner: Silver Metallic, Medium Silver, Gray Metallic, Attitude Black, Avant-garde Bronze Metallic (new) and Super White (new). The retail price for the 2.4 Fortuner runs at RM 186,900 and the 2.7 is listed at RM 199,900. Both prices include insurance and a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty.
