Korean automakers Ssangyong has unveiled the New Rexton 4X4, the latest large SUV with a four-wheel drive and the second model in the brand’s line-up this year.
The new Ssangyong Rexton is a large, D/E-segment authentic 4×4. It is powered by a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine delivering maximum power of 181PS and maximum torque of 420Nm, with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission. In dimensions, the large SUV measures 4,850mm in length, 1,960mm wide, 1,825mm high, and has a 2,865mm wheelbase.
In looks, the G4 Rexton takes inspiration from the ‘Dignified Motion’ of SsangYong’s design language, ‘Nature-born 3 Motion’. Three variants are available, the EX, ElX and Ultimate Rexton. With a fresh, modern yet restrained look, there’s a cohesive appearance to the front where the radiator grille and headlights blend together harmoniously.
The grille resembles the spread wings of a bird in flight and now adopted as the new frontal look across newer SsangYong models. Other front fascia hightlihts include projector headlights with DRLs and active bending foglights, and a robust body detail and large wheels to make the car stand out from the side.
The rear of the car offers a gracious yet purposeful look, with LED rear combination side lights, air spoiler with high-mounted LED stop light and LED number plate lights, while the option of 17-, 18- or 20-inch alloy wheels, add to the overall appearance.
The driver’s seat is 8-way power-adjustable, while the front passenger seat is a 6-way power-adjustable (ELX & Ultimate), with memory settings for the seat & door mirror positions (Ultimate), and with automatic easy access mode for the driver’s seat (the driver’s seat position automatically adjusts when the door opens), heated seats front and rear, and also ventilated front seats on the Ultimate variant, which also features auto door-locking.
Other amenities include a 9.2-inch touchscreen with smart device connectivity and navigation, a Supervision instrument cluster with a 7-inch LCD display, dual zone a/c with dust filters, a USB connector, 220V inverter at the rear, a huge boot space with a capacity of 1,977 liters, with seats down (820 liters seats up).
To ensure overall rigidity, the new Rexton gets a high-strength steel construction of its body, which means the car is stiffer than many monocoque-built competitors in this category. Mounted on an extremely strong Quad-Frame, this structure is built using 1.5Gpa-grade ultra-strength steel, a world first, and featuring 81.7% high strength steel to greatly improve strength while also reducing weight.
Safety has not been overlooked as the new Rexton is equipped with nine airbags, pedestrian protection, and plenty of electronic aids such as brake assist, electronic brake force distribution and ABS, traction control, active rollover protection and an emergency stop signal, as well as forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, high beam assistance and traffic sign recognition. The top of the range Rexton Ultimate also gets cameras front and rear as well as on the door mirrors, and added electronic safety aids include 360° around-car monitoring, blind spot detection as well as rear cross traffic alert.
The new Ssangyong Rexton has started its sales pitch in the U.K. at a starting price of 26,245 pounds.
