The new Proton Iriz becomes the latest edition to the national car manufacturers’ portfolio, following DRB-Hicom’s take over two years ago. Only two variants have been introduced by Proton since the privatization of the national manufacturers with a history of a quarter of a century; the Preve in April 2012 and the refreshed Preve in the form of the Suprima S in August 2013. During this particular period, the national car company is indeed in need of a major overhaul and competent leaders to curb with its eroding identity in the automotive industry.
Proton’s corporate hierarchy would soon receive a further blessing when Tun Mahathir Mohammad, the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia and father of Automotive in the country, decided to take the helm as chairman of the national car company earlier this year. Since then, the entire organization at Proton could breath a huge sigh of relief…
The all-new Proton Iriz is the first compact variant to be distributed by the national car manufacturers, under the stewardship of Tun Mahathir. The codename Iriz is picked from the word Iris, which is a thin layer between the eye’s pupil and retina. It signifies the new compact car’s forward looking demeanor and contemporary standards. Hence, the Proton Iriz carries a tagline “Made for you, Proton Iriz lets you live the way you want to”.
Proton’s new compact with a fresh approach to contemporary styling
Exterior-wise, the new Proton Iriz carries a front-end look that resembles rather closely to the best selling compact in the country – the MyVi. The car’s front fascia with the almond-shaped headlights with Smart Light, straight-lined LED DRL foglights, chrome-accented grille, and the black-out bumper lend the compact car a bold statement. All-around bodykit, from front skirt to rear spoiler, provides the Iriz with a more aggressive stance. At the side, the obvious shoulder line, turn signal and a triangular panel on the doors give it a unique profile. The slim tailgate, spoiler, slender combination lights and sculpted bumper with a diffuser-like fixture give the rear of the Iriz a sporty impact. Either 14-inch or 15-inch wheels complete the Iriz’s package, depending on whether it’s the 1.3-liter or 1.6-liter.
In dimensions, the Proton Iriz has a short wheelbase of 2,555mm, with length measuring 3,920mm, width at 1,722mm and height at 1,554mm. The compact’s kerb weight ranges from 1130 kilograms to 1185 kgs, depending on versions.
The new Iriz’s interior takes up a trendy cabin with all the necessary accessories and amenities. When it comes to amenities, the Proton Iriz doesn’t spare that much, it has a push-start switch, keyless entry, a 215 – 270 liters trunk space, ample small item compartments, extendable sunvisors and fabric seats. The top-of-the-line Iriz has full leather steering wraps with switches and leather seats. At the same time, the 6.2-inch touch screen with rear view camera is only valid for the 1.6l Iriz versions.
Two new engines are specially derived for the new Proton Iriz, in the form of a 1.3-liter and 1.6-liter; both paired to either a 5-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission. The 1.3l version punches 70 kW of output and 120 Nm of torque, whereas the 1.6l does 10 kW extra and 30 Nm more.
Safety features are not compromised for the new Proton Iriz, with these standard equipement; ESC, TCS, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist and Hill-hold Assist. On the passive list, there are 6 airbags, RESS body structure, impact sensing door unlock and whiplash protection. The car has earned a 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.
