UMW Toyota Motor today unveiled the anticipated All-New Toyota Alphard and Vellfire MPVs for the domestic market. Both star-studded Toyota MPV models have been immensely popular with Malaysian over a number of years. While UMW Toyota Motor has offered the previous generation of the Alphard in its Toyota model line-up, this is the first time that the Vellfire is being officially sold in the country. The Alphard runs its third generation life cycle, while the Vellfire begins its second generation. The new Toyota Alphard, available in 3.5 and 3.5 Executive Lounge, is priced from RM419,000 and the Vellfire runs from RM355,000.
Although both models have similarities and designs with strong character, the design themes are different; the New Toyota Alphard is ‘Bravely Magnificent’ while the New Toyota Vellfire looks ‘Bold and Fearless’. Each model also has styling features which provide, even at a glance, and the bold forms with accented surfaces depart from the conventional boxy look of traditional MPVs.
Key exterior highlights of the latest generation Alphard comprise of the large, Full LED headlights with DRLs. The two ‘J’ shapes in the headlights express a wide impression as they emanate from the grille on each side. Viewed from the side, the blacked-out quarter pillar expresses a cabin that flows through, emphasizing strength. The shoulder, which firmly passes through a horizontal axis starting from the headlights, expands in an arc from the front of the vehicle towards the rear. On the center pillar, Z-shaped chrome ornamentation extends from the front seat area to the rear seat area, strengthening the evolution of the MPV’s heritage. Power foldable door mirrors with integrated signal lights are the corresponding profile highlights of the new Alphard.
From the rear, the bold form and accented surfaces depart from the conventional boxy look of traditional MPVs. The Alphard has wraparound U-shaped rear combination lights with chrome garnish while those on the Vellfire are C-shaped. At the same time, the corner edges of the vehicles are emphasized, with a firm underbody that follows a horizontal axis capped by a separate cabin form.
Moving to the inside, the Alphard and Vellfire are all about plush cabins and comfprt. The interior of both MPVs are designed with the concept of ‘Avant Gorgeous’. The top-tiered Alphard has semi-aniline leather upholstery throughout while the other variants have leather upholstery. Interior color themes for the Alphard 3.5 Executive Lounge are beige or black with VIP woodgrain trim, while the Alphard 3.5 has a beige color theme with brown woodgrain trim. Vellfire 2.5 has a black color theme with black woodgrain trim.
Pertinent cabin impression of the Alphard is the Metallic ornamentation and woodgrain pattern with fine details. The optitron meter combination consists of 3-dimensional meter rings and the coolant temperature and fuel gauges express a high quality feel. Between the meters is a 4.2-inch color TFT Multi-Information Display (MID). A myriad of top-notch highlights include touchscreen display audio system (8 inch for the Alphard Executive Lounge, 7 inch for the Alphard 3.5 and Vellfire), embedded in the dashboard, and the 17-speaker JBL system in the Alphard Executive Lounge.
Interior packaging has been improved with the increase in the wheelbase by 50 mm and with the door opening enlarged by 70 mm, access to the second and third row seats is also easier. The step-up height is also reduced by 50 mm for easier entry/exit and although the overall height of the vehicle is lower by 20 mm, the generous floor to ceiling dimension is unchanged from before because the floor height has been lowered.
As a Toyota first, a new easy to use Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is now available for the models. It also auto engages/disengages when the driver puts the vehicle in “P” or “D”. Comfort and convenience are apparent in both models with powered front seats and an Ottoman feature for the front passenger’s seat. For the Alphard 3.5 Executive Lounge, the rear 1st row seats are exclusive VIP seats with more width and additional functions. A control panel is provided on the armrest for ease of making adjustments, and a walk-in switch makes it easier to get in and out. The Alphard 3.5 and Vellfire 2.5 get Captain Seats in the middle row which also have power reclining and Ottoman features, as well as a side table. Both models and variants come with Power Sliding Doors on each side. The door operation is designed to ensure that in the event of obstructions, the movement will stop immediately.
