Having debut in June last year, the Volkswagen Golf R was the favorite amongst the judges due to its prominent hot-hatch features and sheer ‘awesome-ness’. With its signature “R” design front end and ready-for-action profile, the Golf R resembles its sibling GTi rather closely. But, what differentiates the Golf R from the GTi are several incredible figures such as the pure power output of 290 hp, 380Nm of torque and the 5-second century sprint. A reworked 2.0-liter turbocharged powerplant is paired to the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system and 6-speed DSG gearbox for even more class leading figures.
Volkwagen Tiguan is a well-endowed compact SUV
The Volkswagen Tiguan came about around the same time as the Golf R. This fully imported compact SUV from Deutschland (Germany) won the hearts of the judges thanks to its pure fusion of innovation and performance. The 2014 Tiguan is a step-up from the previous generation, with a more endowed design and new innovations. Its 1.4 TSI engine puts out impressive 160PS @ 5,800rpm and 240Nm @ 1,500-4,500rpm, which translates to commendable performance and decent ride. In fuel economy terms, the Tiguan gives a good return of 7.1l/100km on a combined cycle. Equally impressive are the SUV’s 0 – 100km/h dash and top speed numbers, which tabulate at 8.9 seconds and 198km/h. On innovations, the Tiguan features idle stop and regenerative braking, two technologies which were not ready at the time of the Tiguan’s initial launch in 2011.
On receiving the awards, Volkswagen Malaysia’s Managing Director Armin Keller remarked, “The recognition for the awards is a testament to our cars’ class-leading capabilities and its universal appeal across nationalities and various walks of life. Year-on-year, we are proud recipients of these industry awards and we strive to continue providing our domestic customers with the best there is to offer.”
The Golf R is available from RM245,888 and the Tiguan rings in at RM 178,888, available now at Volkswagen dealerships nationwide.
