The Volkswagen Polo by ABT

Volkswagen Polo by ABT_5 Figures that are easy to remember: 40 years ago the first VW Polo had exactly 40 hp and by today’s standard, it was rather poorly equipped. But that was something all compact cars in the 70s had in common. By the way, that VW Polo had outdid most of these cars by virtue of its safety features and rolling comfort, for example, were exemplary.

In 2015, the VW Polo is a rather different kettle of fish, though, as attested to by the “ABT-ed” variant in particular. With its “New Generation“ performance upgrades, based upon a specially developed control unit, the Polo V shows up to 230 hp (169 kW) and 360 Nm of torque, and in the case of the serial, standard version 1.8 TSI, the Polo goes 192 hp  (141 kW) and 250 – 320 Nm.

Just below the Polo V and the Standard 1.8TSI, you have the 1.2 TSI, which thanks to ABT tuning, can churn up to 140 hp (103 kW) and 220 Nm. In order to achieve top cornering characteristics, ABT has installed the best sport-type springs, lowering the front axle by 25 mm and the rear by 30 mm.

But no matter how much power the car shows, by comparison with the 70s, when even many 911 still featured steel wheels, today stylish alloy wheels are a must. To stand out from the 13-inch wheels with small tyres of the original Polo, ABT  now sells nothing but 18-inch with 215/35 R18 tyres, either with ER-C wheels or Z and DR, with some also in different colors.

Otherwise, the Polo is also stylishly decorated, e.g. with a carbon-look rear attachment above the third braking light and the cool rear skirt set, also in carbon-look. And there is the mighty exhaust system with its two mid pipes. Exclusively available for the three-door variant is the bi-colored carbon wrap set.

Inside, the interior receives ABT-logo integrated entrance LEDs, floor mats and more. Here are the complete ABT elements incorporated into the VW Polo 40th Anniversary editions: ABT Elements: ABTcarbon-look rear attachment, ABT rear skirt set, ABT sticker set (two-coloured carbon-look), ABT WHEELS in ER-C, DR or Z-Design in 8.0 x 18 inch ET35 (215/35 R18 tyres), ABT muffler system with two end pipes, ABT suspension springs (FA 25 mm, RA 30 mm lowering), ABT floor mats and ABT LED-door entrance lights with ABT logo.
