2015 Toyota Camry arrives in style

2015 Toyota Camry 2.0 with ambassadors The all-new 2015 Toyota Camry has arrived on our shores, and by all-new, it really is; ALL-NEW. First up, under the bonnet, the Camry receives a new engine – 6AR-FSE 2.0 liter four-cylinder petrol engine with VVT-iW and D-4S direct and port injection which churns out a healthy 167 PS at 6,500 rpm, equating to an increase of 17 PS and 9 Nm from its predecessor.

The time has come for Toyota to replace the outdated 4 speed automatic transmission, and the Camry now comes with a newly configured 6-speed automatic gearbox with Super-ECT. In efforts to further improve fuel efficiency, the car is capable of running on both Otto and Atkinson cycles for much improved efficiency, with a combined ECE-rated fuel consumption of 7.3 liters per 100 km, which is an improvement from the 8.3 liters per 100 km, previously.

There is more good news for the Camry, as the 2.5 Hybrid version is now available in the country. The Camry 2.5 Hybrid comes with a 2AR – FxE 2.5 liter VVT-i four-cylinder petrol engine, which churns a decent 160 PS at 5,700 rpm and 213 NM at 4,500 rpm, coupled with a 143 ps and 270 Nm electric motor. To our surprise, the battery pack comprises nickel metal hydride, even in an age where Li-on is a common choice for safety and dependable reasons. When combining the petrol powerplant and hybrid system, the Camry 2.5 gives up a total output of 205 PS at a combined fuel consumption of 5.2 liters per 100 km.

There are three variants for the Camry; the base 2.0E, mid-level 2.0G and the top of the range 2.5 Hybrid. Both the 2.0E and 2.0G comes with HID projector headlights with LED daytime running lights, dual exhaust outlets, keyless entry and push-button start. The difference between the base model 2.0E and mid-level 2.0G are the active safety features, fabric seats and cruise control. Both 2.0E and 2.0G get 2 airbags for the driver and passenger.

The top of the range, 2.5 Hybrid comes with LED twin-projector headlamps, automatic wiper, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a seven-inch touchscreen navigation system with Bluetooth connectivity and reverse camera, a 10-speaker JBL sound system, a Panasonic Nanoe air ionizer and Qi wireless charging. The top flight Camry’s safety features include seven airbags, VSC, Hill Start Assist and Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).

We at Motorsportchannel.com had a chance to preview the new Toyota Camry at the Setia Alam Convention Center, two days prior to the official unveiling. We noticed several alterations from the previous Camry and the current one.

First up, the 2015 Camry compared to its predecessor has a more refined gear shift and lesser engine noise in the cabin. While the interior layout has remain pretty much the same as the previous edition, the knobs and switches have been gifted a premium makeover and general refinement.

In an acceleration test, the 2.5 Hybrid did not disappoint, it reached 100kmh from stand in 8.6 seconds and torque from the electric motor was rather instant. The instantaneous torque translates to zero torque lag where you normally get in regular petrol cars. Thanks to a reliable NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness), we felt that the cabin was a lot more quiet and comforting.

New suspension calibration for the new Camry has been sorted out, which puts the Camry in its own class, in the terms of comfort, handling and stability.

All in all, the 2015 Toyota Camry has been vastly improved from its predecessor, but what grinds my gear is that the 2.0 versions only come with 2 airbags and most important active safety features are omitted from the base version of the Camry. In conclusion, the new Camry is a well engineered car, but could be instilled a little more equipment and pertinent safety features.
