A car’s Air Filter is important to ensure clean air and prolong engine life

Air filtration is an important component in a car, especially in these current pandemic times. People should take air quality inside a vehicle more seriously whether travelling to and from work or going on a joyride. It’s not just the air quality, but the overall interior (we’ll talk about a clean car interior in our next feature).

How important is air filtration in your car? First, it helps to filter out airborne contaminant that make its way into your car. Also, proper filtration ensures driver and passengers breath clean air while inside the car. These days, cars are fitted with effective air filters and even purifiers to help curb with all kinds of pollutants. For example, Proton X70 comes standard with the N95 cabin filter on top of the existing air purifier. The N95 filter obviously improves in-cabin air quality, thanks to its capability of removing 95% of particles larger than 0.3 microns and 98% of PM2.5 dust particles.

In addition, the cabin filter in the X70 promotes clean air and respiratory health. In simple terms, an effective filter is more efficient than the average dust and pollen filter, and thus able to remove more contaminants. Apart from effectively filtering smoke, dust and bacteria, it initiates an allergy-free environment by reducing allergens from pets, aphids and pollen. If your car has a cabin filter, it is usually integrated with the air conditioning and starts alongside the a/c.

Replacing air filter

An air filter might not seem an important component to regularly check and change, but they are essential in maintaining your car’s performance.  A clean air filter helps to better fuel efficiency and acceleration, therefore it is recommended to check it regularly. Have it cleaned or replaced, if necessary.

Secondly, a contaminated air filter limits the amount of air flowing into your car’s engine, making it work harder and therefore, using more fuel. A clogged air filter reduces the air flow to the engine, which could pollute spark plugs. This causes some engine disruptions which often result in the engine service light lighting up.

Lastly, by replacing the clogged air filter or cleaning it out if it’s a compatible filter, you’d have ensured a longer lasting engine life by preventing any dust and dirt from reaching the combustion chamber.
