As part of the 2021 resurgence, Toyota Malaysia has announced several new and exciting models to its repertoire. The Yaris GR and Vios GR-Sport are the next two to get the spotlight after their initial introduction a little over a month ago.
As everyone should know, the Yaris and Vios share a similar platform and for the Vios, it’s only natural for Toyota to make it sportier and more dynamic to appease its target market, namely fresh graduates, first-time car buyers and members of the fairer sex. However, the Yaris GR is not for the common folk with a price tag of RM 299,000. The Vios GR-Sport, on the other hand, is skewed towards affluent buyers who are looking for a fancier version of the Vios at a price tag of RM 95,284.
The Yaris GR has a worldwide distribution of just 25,000 units and only 200 units are allocated to Malaysia. This made-for-rally hot hatch is a ‘Homologation Special’ developed from experience gained from (WRC) World Rally Championship. Specifications of the Yaris GR follows close to the actual rally car, the Yaris WRC, used in the rally championship. The Yaris GR, therefore, is definitely not for the faint-hearted…
Vios GR-Sport, a value added proposition for new buyers
The Vios GR-Sport or GR-S is the top-of-the-line version in the Vios line-up. It is the product of three seasons of Toyota’s local one-make series, the Vios Challenge. Produced at Toyotas local Bkt. Raja plant, the VIos GR-S sports a dynamic aerokit with GR Sport emblem, and unique front and rear bumpers. In order to portray a street racer, a diffuser is added to match the black spoiler, side skirtings and mirrors, as well as bespoke 17-inch wheels with 205/45R17 low profile tyres. Needless to say, Toyota gave it a sports-tuned suspension.
Power output is pretty much similar to the production Vios, except for the 10-speed CVT transmission with sports mode, which guarantees a speedier gear shift from standstill. Steering shifters are included in the package as well.
Inside, the Vios GR-S isn’t your typical Vios, it invokes that racing spirit like none other. Check out the leather sports seats in black with red stitching, GR-S emblem on headrests, the leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering, gear knob in leather, GR specified mats and GR logo on the push start button. They haven’t forgotten about the driver instrument cluster, the Vios GR-S gets a red Optitron meter panel with red needles with GR animation on the 4.2-inch Multi-Information display.
The Vios GR-S is offered in only 2 body hues: Platinum White Pearl and Red Mica Metallic.
For those interested in the GR Yaris, Toyota is offering a standard Performance Pack into the deal, plus an ‘Early Bird Package’ that comes with an exclusive helmet bag (limited to the first 65 bookings). You also get a GR Yaris scale model and entrance to a GR Yaris Driving Experience to learn how to tame a true Rally car.
