Christmas Cheers with the New Kia K5 Fastback

Getting ready for its global sales roll-out in early 2020, the New Kia K5 Fastback is the latest product by the Korean marque. The mid-sized sedan now comes with smartstream engines, dual clutch 8-speed gearbox and all-wheel drive. The K5 is also known as the Optima.

As a fastback, the K5 sedan’s silhouette is obvious with a tendency towards sporty.  As always, the signature Tiger-nose grille and LED headlights with DRLs take the limelight at the front, followed by the hood with air curtains and a wider air intake at the lower bumper.

The fastback profile is most evident when viewed from the side. While, the Stinger-inspired wheel arches give the car a lowered stance. In fact, the car is lowered by 20mm and decreased in length by 50mm from the previous generation, as does the width and wheelbase. All the elements forthwith are meant to interpret a clear fastback roofline. From the rear, the new LED DRLs are fitted to give it a ‘heart beat’ shape, like the front. A ‘ducktail’ has been added along with a fresh lower bumper and dual muffler to fulfill a sporty demeanor. Wheel sizes from 16 – 18 inches are standard; the top flight K5 GT however comes with 19-inch to match its dynamic front and rear bumpers, GT emblems and dual twin exhaust tips.

Inside, a driver-oriented cockpit and spacious cabin are the name of the game. A wide dashboard with integrated infotainment, paired to the instrument cluster, An optional 10.25-in touchscreen can be attached with the 12.3-in cluster. Other highlights include ambient lighting, BOSE surround sound system, fabric/synthetic leather/leather upholstery, wood/metallic trimmings on the dash, 8-in HUD and voice recognition function.

With the look, Kia doesn’t shy away from the performance factor. A range of new ‘Smartstream’ 1.6 TGDI powertrains, fitted with all-wheel drive, are available. Most K5s are standard fitted with front-wheel drive. Two other engine options 2.0l and 2.5l  are valid. Depending engine choice. output ranges from 152 ps – 194 ps and torque between 192 – 265 Nm. The GT is most powerful in the K5 line has a 2.5l turbo diesel to push 290 ps and 422 Nm. It goes from 0 to hundred in about 6.6 seconds. As with previous generation of K5, hybrid powertrain is available as an option. Transmission choices come in 6- or 8-speed gearbox. Meantime, four drive modes are selectable from Eco to Custom to suit the driver’s mood.

The Kia K5 Fastback is expected to hit major markets in the first quarter of 2020.
