|Following a recent Sneak peek of the country’s first Hybrid MPV, Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) today presented the Nissan Serena S-Hybrid MPV proper at the Setia City Convention Center in the new Setia Alam township.|
The Nissan Serena S-Hybrid, aptly themed “Meet the Hybrids – New Age Family, New Age MPV”, is obviously targeted at families, but most of all for families who desire a spacious MPV with lots of updated tech stuff and possibly a large vehicle that yields exemplary fuel efficiency.
Exterior-wise, the Nissan Serena S-Hybrid is a cross between the popular Toyota Alphard and the previous generation Serena MPV, in our opinion. The highlights include blue headlight inner lenses, high-intensity LED rear combination lights, a clear LED High Mount Stop Lamp and somewhat ‘miniscule’ 16-inch wheels.
Moving to the interior, the dashboard has a futuristic presentation that showcases a sophisticated Eco Driver Navigator (used for fuel monitoring) and an extended center piece which houses the a/c vents, touch display, audio unit and gearknob. This Hybrid MPV accommodates up to 8 occupants and offers up to 14 seat configurations. And thanks to the sliding Smart Multi Center Seat, there are additional storage in the first row as well as an extra seat in the second row and even an expandable tray table to be shared with the third row occupants.
Getting in and out of the Nissan Serena S-Hybrid is rather convenient with the powered sliding doors on both sides of the vehicle. Just one touch is required on the door handle to operate the sliding doors with an opening of 802mm wide and 1,308mm tall. The one-touch operation also extends to the i-Key fob and dashboard-mounted buttons on the driver side.
Unlike conventional MPVs, the Serena S-Hybrid’s third row is accessible in more ways than one; center walk-through or with the aid of the sliding captain’s chair on the second row. Meantime, the third row seats can be put away for more boot space.
Optional accessories for Nissan’s Hybrid MPV consist of a roof-mounted 10.1-inch LCD panel, door visor, combination leather interior and window tinting.
The Nissan Serena S-Hybrid takes on a MR20DD 4-cyliner DOHC twin-CVTC engine with an electric motor. The powertrain has Idling Stop which switches off engine when the MPV comes to a halt; it restarts in less than 0.3 seconds. Output and torque of the Hybrid MPV are 147 PS at 5,600rpm and 210Nm at 4,400 rpm respectively. Based on the Japan JC08 test cycle, the Serena S-Hybrid is said to achieve 15.2km/liter (best in its class). Sports suspension are added for nominal stability on the fast track.
ETCM is confident of its 350 units per month target for the CBU Nissan Serena S-Hybrid due to its relative reasonable pricing at RM149,500 on-the-road with insurance, plus 3-year or 100,000km warranty. Potential owners would be happy to note that it costs only RM1,000 to replace the Hybrid MPV’s battery pack. Body colors valid for the Serena S-Hybrid are Dark Purple, Super Black, Brilliant Pearl White and Brilliant Silver. ETCM has also indicated plans to locally assemble the Serena S-Hybrid in the near future.
The Nissan Serena Hybrid goes on a nationwide roadtour from 24 July till 1 September. Be sure to catch a glimpse of the Nissan Serena S-Hybrid and potential buyers get complimentary 6.5-inch Multimedia Navigator with Rear View Camera, DVD player, iPod connectivity, USB & Bluetooth, a package worth RM3,300, during this limited time period.
