Genesis GV80 SUV is first Vehicle in the world with Noise-Cancelling capability

By now, almost everyone has heard of Noise-Cancelling technology. If you haven’t, here’s a short brief: Noise cancelling is widely available for earphones and headphones, it connects via Bluetooth or NFC and functions to block out external disturbances related to sound or unwanted noise. It allows listener to enjoy pure music and beats without distractions. Noise-cancelling infused earphones or headphones are positioned as premium goods.  

In the automotive industry, Hyundai and Harman International have joined forces to come up with the world’s first active road noise cancellation system for a production vehicle.  As we’ve stated, noise-cancelling is relatively premium, the Hyundai-Harman Road-Noise Active Noise Control (RANC) system is made available on the new Genesis GV80 SUV. RANC works to reduce in-cabin noise level by cancelling out unwanted sound originating from the tyres and road surfaces while driving. Genesis is of course Hyundai’s upmarket brand. According to Hyundai, the Genesis GV80 SUV has been unveiled on 15 January in Korea. The Premium SUV is predominantly for the U.S. market.

Harman Road-Noise Active Noise Control (RANC): How it works

With the noise-cancelling capability, the Genesis GV80 becomes the first production car to feature noise-cancelling technology. The road noise active noise control is based on Harman’s HALOsonic suite of noise management technologies and solutions.

When it comes to cars, sound must be distinguished from noise. On and off the road, sound has an essential role to play. It is a key influencer in customers’ purchasing decisions and wholly contributes to the pleasure of the driving experience. Noise on the other hand, is a nuisance; too much of it can ruin a driving experience.

So how did noise-cancelling tech become a thing for cars? Well, there’s a need to address on unwanted in-car noise, especially when it comes to premium cars. Cars have this thing called NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness), but it’s just isn’t enough.  Here’s where the RANC comes in: RANC control processor uses reference signals received from acceleration sensors placed strategically along the suspension and chassis of the car to predict noise transferred into the cabin and to generate an anti-noise wave in real-time. Compute time and signal transfer speed are optimized to allow for an analysis of the intruding noise and the generation of the anti-noise within milliseconds, thereby preventing the noise from reaching the occupants’ ears. Error microphones constantly monitor the system performance in each seat location to ensure a more pleasant ride for all vehicle occupants.
