Hyundai Elantra Flexes Executive Muscle

Hyundai has such a way with automotive technology. Driving this key strength home, the Elantra 2.0 Executive marries power with performance to deliver a speedster that exceeds expectations. Deborah Joy Peter lives to tell the tale.

Hyundai Elantra 2.0 Exec: Rain. Mist. Darkness.

Battling such elements as the above can prove a slippery slope, experienced driver or not. Even with a standard A to B sort of commute, the aforementioned conditions can without warning turn what should have been a no-frills trail into a delicate obstacle course requiring the delivery of defensive driving on the fly. Add to said mix mountainous terrain, a heavy downpour, long-distance driving with zero sunlight, and moisture-laced roads that just won’t quit, and suddenly, the twists, turns, and blind spots along the way are the least of one’s worries as far as curveballs go.

Hyundai Elantra 2.0 Exec: High on Hot Wheels

Imagine. It is close to midnight and nearly pitch black all around. The weather is wetter than a centenarian’s pool of drool, and the fog outside thicker than Angeline Jolie’s jaw-dropping lips. The windscreen is taking unfriendly fire from the unstoppable beating of mad precipitation against a glass shield which is the opposite of bullet-proof. The perfect brew for a potential vehicular disaster, there’s only so much human intervention can achieve from inside an automobile to minimise the effects of the hazards lurking in those night-time shadows. So, what’s a woman to do?

Simmer down and simply hope for the best? The scenario described here, eerie as it may appear, accurately details my encounter during a test drive to Tanjung Bungah and back over the weekend just past. With the thundershowers Penang has been seeing lately, perhaps my choice of destination was a tad risky, but then again, an adventure isn’t worth its salt in the absence of shock and awe. Said challenges aside, the almost five-hour trip was a cinch to tackle. Afforded the luxury of one suave Elantra 2.0 Executive, I was an urban explorer with plenty of ground to cover.

Rain or shine, this Hyundai’s Nu 2.0 MPi engine was all the power I needed for a taste of exceptional performance. Thanks to a variable intake manifold, the gasoline engine on this executive model boasts a maximum output of 152 pferdestrke at 6,200 rpm and an all-out torque of 192 Nm at 4,000 revolutions per minute. No doubt, this car is made to amaze; my travel mate from the trip concurs. Forgive me for not feeling guilty about sprinting down the highway. After all, a suite of premium LED rear combination and fog lamps had my back.

Hyundai Elantra 2.0 Exec: Show-stopping Reflexes

Everyone craves a fast ride with killer pick-up. Being a motoring enthusiast myself, I will admit that speed is indeed a beautiful thing. And with time and tide waiting for no man, one can easily understand why people who love cars constantly fantasise about stimulation by motion. While a pipe full of dreams about swiftness is worth smoking, few ponder upon the unexpected circumstance of going from 170 kilometres per hour to nothing in zero seconds flat. The truth is, unless caught off guard in an emergency, such a situation is very difficult to try and mentally simulate.

Evidence of this can be drawn from my personal experience, when on Friday, as my partner and I headed towards the Penang bridge, a 16-wheeler which was positioned on the left-side of the road we were on began swerving into our lane, with its attached trailer quickly closing in. The driver hadn’t used his indicator to warn us, plus, there was no reason to be switching lanes since there was no other vehicle immediately in front of the truck. The only logical explanation was that he was asleep at the wheel. Only inches away from a collision, we slammed hard on the brakes.

Enter electronic stability control. This particular feature of the Elantra 2.0 Executive detects and reduces loss of traction during sudden braking or turning movements. It truly is a reliable safety protocol that helps maintain stability and control through automatic braking for the individual wheels and decreases engine power to prevent a complete halt. Otherwise, a tailspin or skidding is highly likely. The crazy honking woke the trucker up and made him pull away just in time. Still, it was this car’s braking assistance that saved us both from what could’ve been a crush-and-run.

Hyundai Elantra 2.0 Exec: Island meets Innovation

Getting past that close call, the island proved a landscape worthy of hosting this innovative make. Exactly that along with a complimentary upgrade to the tenth floor of our waterfront hideout rendered our seaside retreat a marvellous escape. Dinner with friends and the opportunity to cruise the streets of the heritage-steeped city of Penang added memorable layers to an already exuberant chapter. As a giant bonus, we were fortunate enough that history wasn’t quick to repeat itself during our journey back to Kuala Lumpur. The return trip was as smooth as a baby’s bottom.

What I especially appreciate about this excursion in particular is that it taught me that a good car does more than just transport its occupants from point of departure to point of arrival. A truly remarkable car goes the extra mile with the provision of technological smarts to keep its passengers both safe and secure when it matters most. To be in a genuinely precarious position and not be burdened by impact or rocked by immense machine shuddering is a benefit to be valued when one is staring danger right in the eye, but sees a glimmer of hope and decent chance of survival.

Aesthetically-speaking, the new variant is for the most part identical in appearance to the brand’s Sport 1.6 version, with the color choices to match. However, an admirer of the marque’s gumption on the design front, I will take the initiative to highlight the absolute comfort offered by the bespoke suede and leather upholstery which complements very exquisite interiors. Meanwhile, the driver’s power seat with an adjustment lever further completes the model’s authority on quality. Style, strength, safety, speed, stamina, and strut, the Hyundai Elantra 2.0 Executive has it all.
