|The Mazda MX-5 has garnered the Japan Car of the Year (JCOTY) for 2015-16, which represents the second straight year Mazda has attained the JCOTY after the Mazda2 accomplished the feat in 2014-15.|
From 2000 till present, Mazda cars took the JCOTY honors four times: Mazda MX-5 in 2005 – 06, Mazda CX-5 in 2012 – 13, Mazda2 in 2014 – 15 and MX-5, 2015 – 16.
The MX-5 was voted as the JCOTY 2015-16 by Japan Automotive Hall of Fame (JAHFA) judges due to its sophisticated open-top sports car design and advanced SKYACTIV Technology. They also noted the outstanding driving performance and fuel efficiency the Roadster exhibits thanks to its lightweight yet highly rigid body.
The MX-5 Roadster is the sixth variant in Mazda’s new-generation lineup of vehicles that feature the full range of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and KODO-Soul of Motion design. This lightweight open-top two-seater front-engine rear-wheel drive sports car is designed for pure Jinba-ittai driving fun. Available in the domestic market, the MX-5 retails from RM 220,000 in four color options: Soul Red Metallic, Crystal White Pearl, Meteor Grey and Jet Black.
In redesigning the fourth generation, Mazda aimed to further deepen the experience of driving fun and managed to both perfect the driving position and reduce the weight of the car by over 100 kilograms. While ensuring that the Roadster would remain a true driver’s car, Mazda engineers were determined to make the vehicle practical enough for daily use, adopting a weatherproof, easy-to-open-and-close top and ensuring enough space in the luggage compartment for two carry-on-sized bags.
“This result is thanks to everyone’s enthusiastic support, and we are both grateful and proud that our Roadster has received such a prestigious award,” said Masamichi Kogai, President and CEO of Mazda. “Inspired by this win, we will continue building cars that offer driving pleasure, aiming to become a ‘one-and-only’ for our customers that they will choose again and again.”
All passenger vehicles with an expected annual sales volume of over 500 units, announced or launched in Japan between 1 October 2014 and 31 October 2015 are eligible for this year’s JCOTY (Car of the Year Japan) award.
