Mercedes-AMG powers up the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG

From the grounds of Affalterbach comes the desirable A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG in 4MATIC+ and S 4MATIC+ versions.

Two variants are made available with a newly developed 2.0-liter engine, the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Output for the cars range from 387 hp all the way up to 421 hp on the S versions. Torque pushes from 475 up to 500 Nm for the newer AMGs. Power to the wheels is made possible with the new AMG SpeedShift DCT-8G dual-clutch transmission with eight gears.  

For reference sake, 0 – 100 km/h dash is done in 3,9 seconds with the A 45 AMG S and the starting CLA 45 AMG does it in 4,1 secs. The new engines are hand built by the folks at Affalterbach.  

Thanks to AMG Torque Control and all-wheel drive control, there’s a Drift mode to go with the Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual and Race modes, and optional AMG Dynamic Plus. Drift mode (standard in the S-models or optional for the standard versions) makes  it possible to do powersliding. The above modes can even by individually configurated with Basic, Advanced, Pro and Master to suit your skill level. On drift mode, a 3-stage ESPwith individual control strategies in Sport Handling mode allows greater drift angles.

Dynamic exterior, yet aggressively poised

Front-end highlights include a shark-nose tip, deep contoured headlights, aero hood with powerdome and front wings with flared wheel arches.  The A 45 AMG is distinguished by the front’s jet-wi andng design, along with horizontal fins in the outer air inlets and the stretched lower air inlet. The CLA 45 has a jet-like external air inlets and front splitter which goes seamlessly into the side air curtains. Both models have a lowered look when viewed from the side to resemble Mercedes-AMG coupés and sportscars. Meantime, Chrome and Night packages make the cars even more awesome.

On wheels and tyres, 18-inch set in tantalum grey are standard and 19-inch 5-twin-spoke in tantalum grey are reserved for the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG S variants.

From the rear, the main draw is the  two round twin tailpipes and wide rear apron. The S variants have large ones with internal fluting and AMG lettering. Other rear highlights are the slim two-piece rear light clusters, diffuser, two vertical twin fins and spoiler lip in vehicle color on the roof spoiler, or on the boot lid on CLA 45.

Build for action and every day comfort

The standard interior comes with upholstery in a black ARTICO man-made leather and DINAMICA microfiber combo with double topstitching in red. The seat belts and dashboard come in microfiber with red borders, while the chromed air vents has a red ring. Optional upholstery in ARTICO leather in neva grey/black with mid-grey double topstitching and light-longitudinal-grain aluminium trim is available.

On the S variants, the steering is made of Nappa/DINAMICA microfiber with contrasting yellow topstitching, plus there’s a yellow 12 o’clock marking, AMG steering wheel buttons and AMG logo, as well as ambience lighting.

All variants have a center console in high-gloss black with a touchpad with additional switches, as well as the MBUX infotainment system and AMG instrument cluster.

The brakes on the standard cars are grey-painted callipers with white AMG lettering, while the S variants get larger, red-painted 6-piston callipers with black AMG lettering. In the base models, front/rear are 4-piston monobloc fixed front callipers act on 350 x 34 millimeter brake discs/rear 1-piston floating callipers on 330 x 22 mm discs. With optional AMG Dynamic+ package, there’s a larger braking system equipped with 6-piston fixed callipers and 360 x 36 mm discs at the front.

On suspension, a McPherson ftont strut is paired to the rear’s 4-link. Optional AMG Ride Control adaptive damping system enables the driver to choose between three different suspension control modes.

As these AMG cars are meant for action at any time, they’re fitted with a lightweight aluminium plate bolted underneath the engine, which works in tandem with a strut tower brace and diagonal struts.
