Mercedes-Benz GLA represents the new-generation of Compact cars

2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has introduced the new GLA and GLA 45 AMG to the domestic market, as part of Mercedes-Benz’s new-generation of Compact Cars expanding portfolio. The new GLA rounds off the extensive SUV portfolio from Mercedes-Benz, which include the GLK, ML, GL and G.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA is available in three versions for the domestic market: the GLA 200 Urban Line, GLA 250 (with the optional AMG Line Night package) and GLA 45 AMG. On looks, the GLA 200 and GLA 250 share stark similarities, from the upright front end with a central star to the rear’s divided rear lights and sculpted back.

An impressionable Compact SUV in the form of the new Mercedes-Benz GLA

At the front, the bonnet’s powerdome structure emphasizes the GLA’s sporty demeanor, along with the twin-louvre grille and unique headlights with DRLs (trifunctional fiber-optics). The front bumper features a diamond-pattern grille in front of the cooling air intakes, and together with a skid plate and dark-grey sill panels, the GLA is portrayed as an impressionable Compact SUV in a Crossover form. The profile of the GLA presents a “dropping line” with light-catching contour, which extends from headlight to the rear wheel arch. Meantime, the muscular shoulders over the rear axle are further highlighted by the inward taper of the C-pillars. Standard-fit roof trim strips complete the impression, or choose instead the optional “Night” package with high-gloss black aluminium roof rails.

From the rear, the large roof spoiler provides an eye-catching outlook. It takes up the structure of the rear roof cladding and accommodates the third brake light and various aerials. In the area of the rear bumper cladding there are other SUV-specific features such as, a robust external load sill guard and simulated underguard available in silver, dark chrome or high-gloss black.

With the GLA 45 AMG, the front fascia include front apron with front splitter and twin-blade radiator grille in matt titanium grey. Completely new is the distinctive AMG lettering at the side between the louvres of the grille. Additionally, there are; Black flics (air deflector elements) above the large exterior cooling air intakes, Bi-xenons, three types of AMG light-alloy wheels, titanium grey inserts on the side sills, “TURBO AMG” lettering on the front wings, aluminium roof rails, diffuser insert and chrome-plated twin-exhaust with flaps. Standard wheel and tyre option for the GLA 45 AMG are 5-spoke alloys and 235/45 R 19, but an optional extra from the AMG Performance Studio offers larger 10-spoke AMG wheels in titanium grey or matt black, with 235/40 R 20 tyres.

Moving to the inside, the GLA has a mixture of matt and glossy 3D effect trimmings on the double-tiered dashboard. Plus, aluminium or wood trims lend a new, modern touch to the interior. The GLA takes up the familiar round air vents (5), with bezels and butterfly-shaped inserts, a free-standing 7-inch display and 3-spoke steering with 12 function switches and galvanized chrome clasp, as well as soft, matt surfaces from the beltline to the door pocket. In combination with the lines or the Exclusive package the door armrests have a high-quality chrome trim strip and standard ambient lighting.

There is a wide choice of seat upholstery materials to select from, i.e. leather, fabric, and even a combination of fabric, leather and colors. Sports seats with integrated head restraints are also available. On the rear of the front seats, there is a framed silver-shadow trip with ambient lighting. Boot space offers a loading capacity of 421 liters, and is extended up to 1235 liters with the rear seats folded down.

The GLA 45 AMG “Edition 1”, exclusive to the country, is dominated by the colors black and red. The combination of ARTICO man-made leather and DINAMICA microfiber are standard all around. Nappa leather and DINAMICA microfiber are adorned on the steering. Other interior highlights are; the E-Select lever with embossed AMG emblem, the “Edition 1” badge on the AMG Drive Unit, decorative foil on the vehicle sides (exclusive trim of the instrument panel), glossy and matt elements with diamond pattern, and the famous AMG lettering. Sound system in the GLA 45 AMG boasts the 450W Harman Kardon Logic 7-surround system, with 12 speakers.

Like the CLA, the GLA packs either a 1.6-liter or 2.0-liter powerplant, paired to a Dual clutch transmission, for an output of 156 hp and 250 Nm of torque(GLA 200) and up to 211 hp and 350 Nm (GLA 250). While the GLA hits 100km/h in 8.9 seconds, the GLA 250 achieves that the sprint in about 7.1 seconds. The GLA 200’s top speed reaches 215 km/h, and the GLA 250 betters it by another 15 km/h. A combined consumption and emissions figures show just 6.5 l/100 km and 151 g CO2/km for the GLA 250, with the GLA 200 boasting lower ratings at 5.9 l/100km and 137 CO2/km, respectively.

The top flight GLA 45 AMG has an upbeat 2.0-liter engine that churns 360 hp and 450 Nm of torque. It does zero to hundred in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Thanks to the combination of standard-fit performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, the GLA 45 AMG impresses with its equally sporty and efficient drive system concept.

The chassis of the GLA features a McPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension. Three control arms and one trailing arm per wheel manage the incoming forces. This means that longitudinal and lateral dynamics are independent of one another.

In addition, the wheel carriers and spring control arms are made of aluminium to reduce the unsprung masses. In the version with 4MATIC, the rear axle carrier is isolated with rubber bushings for the benefit of ride comfort. In all, there are two suspension variants available: the off-road comfort suspension, raised by 30mm as standard on the GLA 200 and sports suspension, a firmer suspension and damping for a sportier style of driving on the GLA 250 4MATIC. As part of this, the body is lowered by 15 mm at the front axle and 10 mm at the rear axle. Meanwhile, AMG sports suspension and AMG high-performance braking system are reserved just for the GLA 45 AMG.

Driver assistance systems for the GLA which are inherited from current Mercedes-Benz variants include Active Parking Assist, Attention Assist, Collision Prevention Assist Plus with Adaptive Brake Assist, and the Adaptive Highbeam Assist (GLA 250).

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia retails the new GLA 200 at RM 238,888, GLA 250 at RM 268,888 (AMG Line with Night Package is an option) and the GLA 45 AMG Edition 1 at RM 378,888; prices do not include insurance. All GLAs come with a 4-year warranty.
