The long awaited Proton X50 is finally unveiled in Proton’s manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim. Proton has invested RM 1.2billion to expand the Tanjung Malim plant to accommodate the production of this new b-segment SUV.
The locally assembled X50 will benefit the various automotive vendor community in Malaysia. This is due to Proton’s purchase intent is expected to amount to at least RM 1.8billion for the X50, and there will be another RM 1billion for the X70 parts purchases. The contribution for Proton’s 2 SUV will total up to RM 2.8billion.
The Proton X50 is the second vehicle coming out from the partnership between PROTON and Geely. Built on the group’s BMA (B-segment Modular Architecture) platform that also underpins products from Geely and Volvo.
On launch, the Proton X50 will come with 4 different specification. For starters, the base spec will be named the 1.5T Standard. The 1.5T Standard will come with a 1.5L turbo engine, 7-speed dual clutch transmission, 4 SRS Airbags, LED headlamps with DRLs, 17” alloy wheel, fabric seats, rear air vents, 8” infotainment head unit, and reverse camera.
Moving on, there is the 1.5T Executive with more upgraded specification. The upgraded specification will get you 6 SRS airbags, leather steering wheel, auto headlamps, front fog lamps, leather seats. After that, there will be the 1.5T Premium with additional specification such as tyre pressure monitoring system, 18” alloy wheels, power adjustable seat for the driver, 10” infotainment head unit, and 360 camera.
Lastly, the crème de la crème of the X50 will be 1.5 TGDI Flagship variant. In the flagship variant, buyers will now get a more powerful 1.5L TGDi engine, advance driver assistance system, dual tone exterior and panoramic sunroof.
Proton X50 order books to open tomorrow
From 16 September onwards, interested buyers can place their booking for a booking fee of RM500. Customer preview sessions will be held at four separate locations beginning 19 September, though these will be closed-door events.
Aside from opening the order books and kicking off customer previews, Proton also announced a contest for all Malaysians to vote for a slogan for its new SUV. More details can be obtained from the company’s official website.
