Proton X70 leads sales resurgence in first two months of 2019

National carmakers Proton had a record breaking month in February with 5,283 units delivered. The numbers represent an estimated market share of 12.7%, an increase of over 3% compared to the same month in 2018.

After the recent unveiling of the X70, sales has been brisk despite February being a shorten month. For February, Proton achieved a 37% increase year-on-year.  The first two months of the year accumulated 42% increase, compared to last year, for Proton.  The X70 model alone accounted for more than half of the total sales.

As a result, Proton leads all its rivals for sales growth for a second consecutive month, comfortably reinforcing its position as the third best-selling automotive brand, after Perodua and Honda, in Malaysia and eyeing a possible return to second place by the end of the year.

More upcoming models for Proton are due, which means sales should remain bullish for the National carmakers in the corresponding months.

Proton X70 retains position as best-selling SUV

Registrations for the Proton X70 continue to increase in volume with each passing month. 2,823 units were registered in February, a number that includes 1,000 units delivered on the same day to customers throughout the country prior to festive period.

As at the end of February, over 20,000 bookings have been placed for the Proton SUV, exceeding initial expectations and firmly establishing the Company as a segment leader despite being new to the market. “The Proton X70 is building its fan base and attracting strong support from Malaysian SUV buyers.” commented Dr Li Chunrong, the CEO of Proton. Since its introduction in December, the X70 has tallied a total of 6,927 registered units. That means, the X70 led the SUV segment in the country for three months, from December 2018 until February 2019. “The figure is remarkable as it was achieved despite two long festive holiday periods (Christmas and Chinese New Year), and encompasses only 78 days in total. Our next target will be to set new six-month and full-year registration numbers and we are confident of achieving them,” added Dr Li.

Proton’s upcoming models

The 2019 Proton Iriz was previewed and promptly went up for bookings at dealerships, prior to its official unveiling. Proton is banking big on the Iriz with a flash promotion of RM9.99 to excite buyers and a series of customer previews in early March at the Proton dealership in Chan Sow Lin.

The other model expected to see light soon is the FL Persona. For more information on the two models, refer to our previous articles.
